SEPARABLE FRAME.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,108, dated J une 16, 1896.

Be it known that I, ELIJAH A. VILCOX, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the count).1 of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separable Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to secure a separable frame constructed of metal or any other appropriate material with grooved recess on the inner side to hold and retain the glass, mat, picture, and backing in a positive position, and also preventing dust or any other foreign substance t enter between either of the parts.

Vith these ends in view my invention consists in the peculiar features and combinations of parts more fully described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, in which like flgures indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures where they occur, Figure 1 is a plan elevation of my improved separable frame. Fig. 2 is acentral section through the line of Fig. 1, enlarged, and looking in the direction of arrow a. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the mat, showing the mode of securing the linen having the design printed or embroidered thereon secured to the mat proper by stitching through the perforations in saidmat. Fig. 4 isa part section of the frame where the parts are joined together.

In said drawings, 2 represents my improved separable frame, consisting of

3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. In this case I have shown the frame separable at the sides, as at 9; but it will be seen that the frame can be separable at the top and bottom instead of the sides without departing from the spirit of my invention.

4 and 6. On the inner side of said opening 11 is a catch 12 to enter a depression upon the

4 and 6, so as to hold and retain the frame in a positive form, as will be understood upon referring to Fig. 4.

3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 is a grooved recess 13 to serve to hold and retain in a positive form the glass 14, mat 15, picture 16, and thevbacking 17, as seen in Fig. 2. The mat 15 is covered with the linen 18, having the printed, painted, or embroidered design thereon, said mat being provided with perforations 19 around the opening 20 and around the edges of the mat, as will be understood. The edges 21 of the linen are then stitched to the back of mat, and the stitches 22 do not appear upon the face of said mat, and then the linen is pushed through the said opening, and the edges 24 of the linen are then drawn over the edges, and stitches 25 go entirely through both linen and mat, as shown in Fig. 2, thus doing away with gluing said linen to the mat, as heretofore.

The grooved recess 13 of the frame partsl will hide or prevent the stitches 25 from being seen, and as the linen covers the stitches 22 the mat will only show when iinished and put in the frame the printed, painted, or embroidered design.

I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction shown, as various changes can be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

A frame consisting of separable bars having grooved recesses 0n the inner sides of said bars to hold the parts, collars 10 secured to the ends of said separable bars, and catches 12 to hold said separable bars together, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
