CORSET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,020, dated July 14, 1896.

T0 at whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MAuRIcE F. Lmoursr, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new Improvement in Anatomical Bicycling-Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents a view, in side elevation, of a half of a corset constructed in accordance with my invention.

My invention relates to an improved anatomical corset, particularly designed to be used as a bicycle-corset, although not limited to such use, the object being to provide a corset which shall give the maximum freedom of movement and comfort, as well as insure support, and which shall avoid the possibility of injury to the person or dress due to the breaking of the stays, which in my corset cannot break, even above the hips, where the stays of corsets as generally constructed are liable to break. I

With these ends in view my invention consists in a corset having certain details of construction, as willhereinafter be described,and pointed out in the claim.

In carrying out my invention as herein shown I employ horizontally, or substantially horizontally, arranged flat tempered wire stays A, bent into serpentine or zigzag form and thus made longitudinally extensible, and flexible both edgewise and fiatwise. These stays are located in suitable horizontal pockets B, formed in the combined back and side corset-section B, and extends from the inner edge of the vertically-arranged back lacingstrip C of the corset forward around under the arms and to the rear edge of the front section D of the corset. Such stays, when arranged as set forth, insure to the corset the maximum of pliability with the maximum of stability of form. The said stays, it will be observed, correspond in their arrangement to the arrangement of the ribs of the body, and leave the abdominal and pectoral muscles free to act in the normal way and afford the natural and therefore hygienic support to the diaphragm.

As herein shown, the front section D of the corset is reinforced by similar but verticallyarranged stays D, of which three are represented, though of course the number may be varied as desired. The horizontally-arranged stays in the combined back and side corset-section and vertically-arranged stays in the front corset-section secure admirable results, as being closely in accord with the bony framework of the body, for where the horizontal stays correspond to the ribs the vertical stays correspond to the sternum or breastbone, to which the ribs are attached at their forward ends, as well as at their rear ends, to the spinal processes, which are represented in the corset by the back lacing-stay.

Although my improvement is particularly well adapted for the making of bicycle-corsets, I do not limit myself to its use in such corsets, but hold myself at liberty to use it in any corsets to which it is applicable, and also to use it in the construction of abdominal supporters. I would, therefore, have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact form set forth, but hold myself at liberty to make such changes as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

An anatomical corset having its front section reinforced by vertically-arranged stays, and having a combined side and back section reinforced by continuous, horizontally-arranged stays extending from the rear edge of the front section to the vertically-arranged back lacing-stay, the said horizontally-arranged stays being made of wire bent into serpentine or zigzag form and longitudinally extensible and flexible both edgewise and flatwise, substantially as set forth.
