To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ABRAM VANDERSALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oolumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Drinking-Cups, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the improvement of drinking-cups and has particular relation to that class of cups known as mustachecups.

The objects of my invention are to provide an improved cup of this class of improved construction and arrangement of parts which may be adapted for communion or ordinary drinking purposes; to so construct the same as to prevent the mustache of a person drinking from contact with the contents of the cup; to provide a receptacle for the nose of the drinker; to prevent the entrance of flies, and to attain other objects and to produce other improvements, which will be more fully set forth hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-' Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improved cup, showing a portion of the same broken away for the sake of clearness. a represents the cup-body, which may be of any suitable cylindrical form, the latter preferably being provided with a flaring base a.

i) represents a cup-top plate or bridge, which consists, as shown in the drawings, of three arms I), which radiate from a common center, thus imparting to said top plate a substantially trefoil shape. I do not, however, limit myself to the number of arms I). The outer end of each of the arms I) is, as indicated in the drawings, of a substantially hook shape and is adapted to engage with the upper edge of the cup, as shown at a.

At the center of the plate I) or atthe junction of its arms is provided a nose pocket or depression d. To the upper portion of the pocket d and beneath the arms 12 is made to fit snugly the upper and smaller end of a downwardlyextending and outwardly-flaring shield c. This frustum-shaped shield c has its lower and outer edge provided at suitable intervals with recesses f, said recessed edge being in close proximity to the inner surface of the cup, a short distance below the upper end of the latter.

plate Z) results in the production of three mouthways for drinking. hen the mouth of a drinker is placed at one of these ways and the cup tipped to the drinking position, it is evident that the radially-arranged arms of the top plate will serve as a guard to prevent the mustache of the drinker entering the cup, while the pocket or depression cl will serve as a receptacle for the nose.

It is evident that when the cup is tipped to the drinking position the liquid contents of the cup will flow through the recesses f and that these recesses maybe of such size as to admit above the level of the lower edge of the shield c that quantity of liquid which may be desired by the drinker, said shield thus operating to prevent an overflow or rise of the liquid within the cup above the lip of the drinker.

It is obvious that the herein-described cup will be of great utility as a communion-cup,

although the same may be employed for ordinary drinking purposes.

In case it is desired the shield 6 may be detached from the plate I) and the cup used without said shield, or both the shield and top plate may be removed from the cup, thus admitting of the latter being used in the ordinary manner.

From the construction herein shown and described, it will readily be seen that a simple, reliable, and effective mustache-cup may be produced of any suitable material and that the same will possess many points of advantage over the ordinary drinking-cup.

Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
