SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561,781, dated June 9, 1896.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL B. FIELD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Scotch Plains, county of Union, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, inwhioh similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention. relates to toys, and the object thereof is to produce an improved toy device which is designed to represent a cockfight, a further object being to provide a mechanical toy which may be manipulated so as to represent a cock-fight, the operation being automatic or partially so.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure l. is a perspective view of my improved toy device; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of a box or casing which forms a part thereof, and also showing the mechanical features thereof; and Fig. 3, a bottom plan view.

In the practice of my invention I provide a box or casing A, which is rectangular and oblong in form and which is also preferably provided with upwardly-directed side and end boards D, the upper edge of which maybe corrugated or curved or otherwise ornamented.

The box or casin A is provided with a top board or cover 0, and formed therein near each end thereof and in longitudinal line are longitudinal slots D.

Arranged transversely of the box or casing A, below each of the slots D, are rods E,which extend through the sides of the box or casing and which are also revoluble and rigidly connected with each of said rods E. At the center thereof are rods F, one of which extends upwardly through each of the slots D.

The figures G and H are designed to represent game-cocks, each of which is provided with pivotally-conneoted legs 9 and h, respectively, and on one side of the box or casing the rods E are provided with upwardly-directed arms K, by means of which said rods F, secured thereto, may be operated in the manipulation of the device.

In practice I prefer to move the arms K by means of a cord L, and connected with the middle portion of said cord is another cord M, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

By giving the cord M a quick pull the rods E will be so operated as to throw the gamecocks G and H together, as shown in Fig. 2, and this operation may be repeated as often and as quickly as desired.

Connected with each of the rods F, below the top plate or cover 0, is a retracting spiral spring N, and when the rods F are thrown forward by pulling on the cord M they will at once he returned to the position shown in Fig. l and in full lines in Fig. 2 by the springs M, and thus this forward and backward movement of the game-cocks may be produced as rapidly as desired. In this operation the game-cocks assume avariety of positions, and

when properly manipulated a very good representation of a cock-fight maybe produced. My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts as herein shown and described, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of my invention. Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a toy device, the combination of a rectangular oblong casing, provided with a top plate or cover having slots formed therein in longitudinal line, transverse rods arranged in said box or casing and extending through the sides thereof, an upwardly-directed rod secured to each of said transverse rods and passing through said slots, each of said upwardly-directed rods beingpivotally connected with a figure which represents a game cock, and said transverse rods being provided at one end with upwardly-directed arms by means of which the device is manipulated, said arms being connected by means of a cord to which is secured an operating-cord, substantially as shown and described.
