Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern.

Be it known that I,'BERNHARD GUGGEN- HEIM, a citizen of the United. States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fans, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a toy fan which is very simple in its construction, the same being manipulated like an ordinary fan, but, due to its novel construction, a small whistle is adapted to operate as the fan is being used, thereby causing considerable amusement.

To the accomplishment of these objects and such others as may hereinafter appear, the invention comprises the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in Which Figure 1 is a front view of the fan. Fig. 2 is a rear view. Fig. 3 is a side View partly in section.

The reference-letter A designates the body portion of the fan, which is provided with a small Whistle B, suitably inserted in the middle thereof by cutting a small hole C in the body portion and then inserting thewhistle in the hole and holding the same in place by two pieces of paper D and E pasted over each. side of the whistle. The body portion A may be of any convenient size and shape and decorated in any desired manner, as is customary with fans of this class. To the back of the body portion A and adapted to operate the whistle B is secured a small bellows F, which is composed of the body member A and the back member G, the same being operatively connected to the handle H at J by means of a small wire K or other suitable fastening device, passing through and holding the handle and bellows to the body portion A. The bottom of the bellows is also suitably pasted to prevent the same from opening, leaving the top of the bellows free to move. The upper part of the handle H is secured to the back member Gr at L in any suitable manner. The back member G may simply afford a back for the bellows F, or the same may in addition be suitably shaped and decorated in the same manner as the body portion A.

The fan is normally adapted to lie flat; but upon being operated, which is accomplished by fanning oneself or by shaking the fan, the body member A moves back and forth and the air drawn in by the bellows through the whistle B operates the same as the air passes out.

The fan, as above described, is very simple in construction and is adapted upon being used of affording considerable amusement to children. The fan can all be made of paper, and the attention of an ordinary observer would not be aroused to the fact that the fan was anything out of the ordinary until the same was used.

The body portion of the fan is preferably decorated with a figure playing some musical instrument, preferably a flute, and as the fan is operated the figure apparently plays.

What I claim is 1. A fan, consisting of a body portion pro vided with a Whistle, a bellows secured to said body portion, a handle secured to one end of said bellows and the bottom of said body portion, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

A fan, consisting of a body portion pro vided With a whistle, aback portion provided witha handle, a bellows connecting said body portion to said back portion for operating said whistle.

3. A fan, consisting of a body portion, a whistle therein, a back portion, a handle thereon, a bellows connecting said body portion to said back portion, whereby the bellows operate the whistle when the fan is shaken by the handle.

4. A fan, consisting of a body portion, a whistle therein, a back portion, a handle secured thereto, a bellows connecting said body portion to said back portion, said bellows being closed at the bottom and suitably fastened to the body and back portions to permit only the top of the bellows to expand as the fan is operated.
