z. DEMAREST. WAIST.
No. 559,793. Patented M9912, 1899.
WlTNESSES: INVENTOR ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
ZACHARIAII DEMAREST, OF BROOKLYN, NEWT YORK.
WAIST.
SPECIFICATION forming psa of Letters maar no. 559,793, dated ivray 1e, ieee.
Application tiled September 19, 1895. Serial No. 562,945. (No model.)
.To @ZZ wiz/om, it :o2/Ly concern,.-
Be it known that l, ZACHARIAH Dnirnnns'r, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vaists; and I do hereby declaro the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, an d to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
lihe object of this invention is to provide a ladys waist which by a simple manipulation can be adjusted at will to t a long or short waisted person.
The invention consists in the improved ladys waist, in the means of changing its length, and in the combination and arrangement of the various parts thereof, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and finally embodied in the claim.
lith reference to the drawings, Figure l is a rear view ol' a ladys waist provided with my improvement; Fig. 2, an inside View of the rear portion of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 2, the waist being shortened; and Figs. et and 5 are sectional views on the lines n; .fo and y vgij of Figs. 2 and 3, respectively.
In said drawings, ct represents a ladys waist provided on its inside with a shirr-facing b, stitched to the waist and arranged in such a position'that when the garment is worn it will be covered by the waistband of the wearers skirt. The shirr-facing extends only on the rear portion of the waist-that is to say, to about the armpit-seams Cif-and has a curve or drop in the center, as shown at o in Figs. l and 2 of the drawings. The shirr strings or tapes d are secured on the inside of the waist and between it and the shirr-faoin g and at or near Athe opposite ends thereof and pass and at the ends of the said shirr-faeing.
The arrangement of parts as above described constitutes a garment provided with my improvements adapted for a long-waisted lady. If the same garment is desired for a short-waisted person, a plait or tuck e is formed in the back of the waist and in front of the shirr-facing, extending from end to end of the latter, and is stitched to the same, as at f, by any chain-stitching machine. Said plait or tuck e is formed by simply taking hold of the waist at or near the ends of the shirr-facing and pulling laterally on the saine until the shirr-faeing becomes substantially straight. The slack thus obtained is doubled over the shirr-faeing and stitched thereto, as above described and as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawings. It will be manifest that by simply pulling out the chainstitched thread the garment is again adapted for a long-waisted person.
I am aware that it is not'new to provide garments, such as shirts, with tucks or plaits for an analogous purpose, and lay no claim, broadly, thereto.
Having thus described m y invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an article of manufacture a waist provided on its inner face at the back thereof with a downwardly-curved shirr-faeing, each end of said shirr-facing having an opening; anda draw-string lying between the body oi. the waist and the shirr-facing and extending through the openings, the shirr-faoing when straightened forming a plait in the body of the waist thereby shortening the back of the waist.
In testimony that I claim' the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of September, 1895.
ZACHARIAII DEMAREST.
