UNITED STATES PATENT Fries,
SARA E. IVALSH, OF LIGHTCLIFFE, ENGLAND.
TRAVELING OR CAMPING-OUT RUG AND BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,641, dated May 5, 1896. Application filed January 24,1896. Serial No, 576,648. (No model.) Patented in England January 26, 1895, No. 1,871.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SARA ELIZABETH \VALSH, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Lightcliife, in the county of York, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Traveling or Camping- Out Rug and Bed for Military Campaigning and other Purposes, (for which I have obtained a patent in England, No. 1,871, dated January 20, 1895,) of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a traveling or camping-out rug (suitable for travelers, soldiers, or others camping out or having to sleep in temporary sheds or out places) which can be easily and readily converted into a comfortable damp-proof bed.
Figure 1 shows a plan of my improved traveling or camping-out rug opened out. Fig. 2 shows a plan of rug folded when in use as a bed. Fig. 3 shows a side elevation of Fig. 1. Fi g. dis a modification of Fig. 1 with air-pillow and damp-proof bed in place of air-bed.
I take a traveling rug or blanket-say seven feet long and five feet wide. Down the center-say two feet wide-I form an ainproof bag or air-bed A, with inflating-tube B at the side, and at the top a second air-proof bag or pillow O, with inflating-tube I). Toward the bottom of the rug the larger air bag or bed A terminates in the flap A, cut or formed to turn over onto the foot of the bed. Also on both sides of the air-bed are wraps or wings E,whieh turn over so as to overlap and fasten or button in the center, such wings E being secured in position by straps F and buttons G, the top part turning back above the pillow. (See Fig. 2.)
For a cheaper and lighter camping-out rug, instead of having the inflating-bed A, I substitute a water or damp proof bed H. (See Fig. 4.)
What I claim as the invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A rug comprising a waterproof central portion A, having an inflatable pillow O at its head and a flap A at its foot, and two flaps or wings E at its sides, the flap A and one of the flaps E being provided with fastening devices, substantially as set forth.
2. A rug comprising an inflatable and waterproof eentral portion A, having an inflatable pillow O at its head and a flap A at its foot, and two flaps or wings E at its sides, the flap A and one of the wings E being provided with fastening devices, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
SARA E. IVALSH.
