STE AMER- RUG, 84C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 536,383, dated March 26, 1 89 5. Application filedMarch 81,1894. serial No. 505,843. (No model.)
closed at the bottom, openat the top, and with a slitin the front at the upper part of the same and having fastening devices upon each side of the slit, the top edge of the bag being also provided in front upon both sides of the said slit with a series of fastening devices adapted to engage with each other. i
In the accompanying drawings, which are herein referred to and form part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention; Fig. 2, a like elevation, showing my invention arranged as when used as a sleeping-bag; Fig. 3, an end view of Fig. 1, looking at the upper end; Fig. 4, a perspec tive view of my invention when used as a hand-baggage receptacle; and Fig. 5 a perspective view, showing my invention in use as a sleeping-bag by a person in a steamerchair.
As represented in the drawings, A designates my combined rug and bag. It is made in the form of a bag, open at the top and closed at the bottom, and preferably, it is made of felted material woven in a tubular form, so as to avoid side seams, but it may be made of flat pieces seamed together at the sides and bottom. The upper part of the front is provided with a slit, 1, to facilitate the drawing of the bag onto the lower parts of a person, and thereby the lower part of the article retains its bag-form to serve as a receptacle for hand-baggage.
The slit 1 is provided with buttons, 2, or other means for fastening the separated. parts of the front together, and the upper edge of the front is provided with fastenings, 3, which should correspond in kind to the fastenings on the front.
part of a person.
The fastenings 3 are provided for the pur pose of contracting the opening at the top of the bag, for the neck of the wearer, and, by manipulating the partsin the manner hereinafter explained, arranging the fabric to form simulated capes, at the upper part of the sleeping bag, to afford greater protection to the chest of the wearer. A diagonal row of fastenings, 4, is also arranged on the front of the bag for a purpose shortly explained. By reason of the slit 1 the flaps, 5, can be thrown back. as indicated by dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 3, and thereby the upper end of the bag 'will be in condition to facilitate the introduction of a persons body into the interior of the bag.
The fastening-devices preferably used on my bag consist of a disk-shaped part having a stud projecting from its center, and another disk -shaped part provided with a central opening which is fitted to engage onsaid stud,
but, the fastening device forming no part of my invention, ordinary buttons andbuttonholes, or any other suitable fastening-device, may be substituted for the fastenings herein described.
Whenmy invention is used as a steamerrug, it is usually closed at the slit 1, as shown in Fig. 1, and thrown over the lap or other When used as a sleepingbag, it is usual-after the bag has been drawn onto the legs and body of the wearer-to engage the two fastenings 2, at the upper end of the slit 1, and, by using the last named fastenings as centers, turning the parts to bring the corresponding fastenings 3, into positions to be engaged, engaging the fastenings 3 to form simulated capes, 6, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, but it can be used as a sleeping-bag by contracting the opening at the upper end of the bag. When used as a receptacle for containing hand-baggage, the slit 1 is usually closed and the hand-baggage is placed in thelower part of the bag, below the slit 1, and, after rolling the bag as shown in Fig. 4, so as to retain its contents safely, a shawl-strap, B, or other fastening, is secured around the roll to afiord means for carrying the same.
The diagonal row of fastenings 4 is proseries of fastenings, 3, upon one side of the vertical opening and adapted to engage with similar fastenings 3 on the other side of the vertical opening, in the manner described; 15'
whereby simulated capes, 6, are adapted to be formed at the upper part of said bag, as herein specified.
