Liihited, Manchester, Englanma British earn- Application-July 22, 1-954,-Serial=No. 444,943 4 Claims. "(CUB-344) This invention relates to mattresses. Amattressin accordance with-the invention is adapted "to be doubled over andahas fastening means whereby partsathereof can 'be releasably fastened together with one part doubled over another so as to form a bag-like containing portion, and carrying means whereby the parts "are'fastened together.
Themattress' may be lined 'andhave a filling of kapok and h yenrore fillingat one end soas to form a'headrest pillow a1; "the said end.
The said "fasteningmeansare preferably sliding clasp fasteners.
The said carrying means may comprise a pair of carrying handles attached tothe mattress.
Each of the parts which are attachable together may be about one-third of the length of the mattress and one of the said parts be at one end of the mattress while one carrying handle may be at the extremity of the said end and the other carrying handle at about two-thirds of the length of the mattress from the first named handle, whereby the mattress when carried will hang uniformly from the handles in three more or less equal parts in side-by-side relationship.
Instead of the two handles, there may be one handle at the said extremity and a slit or slot in the mattress through which the said handle can be threaded so that the part of the mattress which does not form the containing portion can hang flap-like over the mouth of the said portion whilst leaving the handle accessible and be retained in the covering position by the engagement of the handle with the said slit or slot.
A lateral stiffening member may be provided at one end of the mattress.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate more or less diagrammatically constructional examples of the inventi0n- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mattress according to the invention,
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the mattress in a folded position, and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a mattress in a folded position and illustrates another construction.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, in the construction shown therein, there is provided a mattress sack 1 one side 2 of which is composed of waterproof material, for example leather cloth, and the other side 3 of a non-waterproof material. The mattress sack 1 is filled with any suitable stuffing material, for example, kapok, to produce a thin mattress capable of "being folded as will hereinafter be explained, and is provided with spaced rows 4 of lateral stitching for preventing the stuffing from becoming longitudinally displaced. At one United States Patent 0 away from the end .11 of the mattress. handles 15 and 16 may consistof bands or strips of fabric from that end 10 which is remote from the head-rest 6 or pillow. One half 11 of thesliding clasp fastener 8 is attached by sewing along the longitudinaledgefi of the mattress and extends from the closed end 7 of the fastener 8 nearly to the end 10 of the mattress, whilst the other half 12 of the sliding clasp fastener .8 is also attached to the longitudinal .edge 9 of the mattress and extendsfromthe closed end '7 .of the fasteners to a point about two-thirds of the length of themattress away from the end 10 of the mattress. The other longitudinal edge 13 of the mattress is provided with a closed-ended sliding claspfastener 14 sewn to it in 'a similar positionrelative to the end 10 of the mattress. A closed pocket extends across the mattress at the end 10 and contains an elongated piece 21 of flexible wood, cane or the like which keeps the said end from buckling or sagging.
The mattress is further provided with a pair of centrally disposed carryinghandles 15'and 16 respectively, one handle 15 being provided at or near the end 10 and the other handle 16 being connected to the waterproof side 2 or the mattress laterally nearly opposite those of the open ends of the sliding claspfasteners 8 and 14 which are about two-thirds of the length of themattress The carrying sewn or otherwise attached to the mattress.
The sliding clasp fasteners 8 and 14 are so arranged that the first third part 17 of the mattress, measured from the end 19, can be folded over the second third part 18 so that the mattress becomes doubled over, and the two halves of each sliding clasp fastener can then be brought into connection by means of their slides so as to convert the parts 17 and 18 of the mattress into a bag or container the ends of which are formed by the closed slide clasp fasteners 8 and 14, and the sides by the mattress parts 17 and 18 and the bottom by the fold made between the said parts. The waterproof side 2 of the mattress provides the inner side of the bag. The mattress can be carried by the carrying handles 15 and 16 with the last third part 19 of the mattress hanging down alongside the part 18, and with the mouth of the bag or container so formed facing upwardly. The mattress when being carried presents a pleasing appearance due to the fact that it hangs from the carrying handles 15 and 16 in three side-by-side more or less equal portions. The elongated piece 21 keeps the one edge and therefore also the other edge of the bag from buckling or sagging.
The bag or container can be utilised for carrying articles to and from the beach, especially wet or damp articles such as towels, bathing wear and the like, and the waterproofed inside of the so formed bag or container prevents the wetness or dampness from spreading. The mattress is therefore handy for taking to sea-side beaches, rivers, lakes and on picnics, and serves the double purpose of providing something waterproof and yet soft to lie on, and when not employed for lying on, a waterproof bag or container.
In addition to serving as a bag or container for carrying articles, the bag or container may serve as a sleeping bag for a baby, in which case the third parts 17 and 18 can be folded together in the reverse direction or turned inside out, so that the non-waterproof side 3 of the mattress forms the inner side of the bag or con- 3 tainer, preparatory to closing the two slide clasp fasteners 8 and 14.
The presence of the fasteners and handles does not interfere with the use of the mattress, when opened out, on a bed as an addition to or instead of the usual mattress employed on a bed.
In another construction, illustrated in Figure 3 wherein like reference numerals indicate parts similarto corresponding parts in Figures 1 and 2, the mattress is as hereinbefore described, except that the handle 16 between the parts 18 and 19 is omitted, but a slot or slit 20 is provided at the place from which the handle is omitted and extends from one side of the mattress to the other so that the remaining handle 15 can be threaded through it and the third part 19 of the mattress then cover and hang like a flap over the mouth of the bag when the sliding clasp fasteners 8 and 14 are closed. The engagement of the slit 20 by the handle 15 acts to keep the mouth of the bag closed and the third part 19 of the mattress serves to cover the mouth whilst the bag is being carried in its bag form.
I claim:
1. A multipurpose mattress comprising, inner and outer elongated cover members having secured together opposite longitudinal side edges and transverse end edges secured with filling between said cover members, said cover members and filling having longitudinally spaced transverse rows of stitching therethrough and forming a mattress structure, said mattress being foldable on first and second transverse lines of fold coinciding with certain rows of stitching providing a foot section extending inwardly from one end and a head rest section extending inwardly from an opposite end thereof and an intermediate section therebetween, said sections being substantially equal in length whereby the foot section may be folded from a coplanar mattress relationship of the sections onto the intermediate section to form therewith a bag and the head rest section may swing relative thereto, slide fastener devices having first elongated runs secured to opposite side edges of the foot section from said one end thereof to said first line of fold and second elongated runs secured to opposite side edges of the intermediate section and extending from said first to the second line of fold, slide clasp member slidable along said first and second runs from said first line of fold in bag forming relation of the foot and intermediate sections to connect the edges of said sections together in bag forming relation, a stiffening member secured in said one end of the mattress, and carrying handle means secured to said structure.
2. A multipurpose mattress set forth in claim lwherein one said covering member consists of waterproof material.
3. A multipurpose mattress set forth in claim 1 wherein said carrying handle means includes a handle secured to said one end of the structure.
4. A multipurpose mattress set forth in claim 1 wherein said handle means includes a handle secured to said one end of the structure and another handle secured to the structure at said second line of fold disposed so as to lie adjacent the first named handle in bag forming relation of said foot and intermediate sections.
