Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES C. HYDE, OF WEST HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND D. S. THOMPSON7 OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTT-HINGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,954., dated June 26, 1866.
To au whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JAMES C. HYDE, of West Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Butt-Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a face View of the hinge open; Figs.2, 3, and 4, the formation of one half, and in Fig. 5 the formation of the other half.
My invention relates to an improvementin the construction of wrought butt-hinges, whereby the use of the wire spindle is avoided; and that others may be enabled to manufacture my improved hinge, I will proceed to describe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I punch the two parts A and B from sheet metal in the usual. manner. The part A, as seen in Fig. 2, vis formed with slots ce, more or less in number, and said slots are formed at such distance from the edge that the edge may be turned over, as seen in Figs. 3 and 4. The edge is thus turned over and struck up so as to form a bead, c, along the edge of the part A, as seen in Figs. 3 and 4. The other part. B, is formed, as seen in Fig. 5, with tongues d, corresponding to the slots a. Then the tongues el are passed through the slots and turned over around the edge c of the part A, as seen in Fig. l7 which completes the hinge.
The holes for the screws are formed, and the hinge applied to its Various uses in the usual manner.
Having therefore thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A hinge the two parts ot' which are formed and united substantially in the manner herein set forth.
JAMES C. HYDE.
