L. S. BACHB.
SASH PASTBNBR.
` Patented Apr. 21 1896.
C6 MX ATTOR N EYJ lINTTnn STATES i PATENT Trice,
LEIGH STANLEY BACI-IE, OF BOUND BROOK, NEV JERSEY.
SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,757', dated April 21, 1896.
Serial No. 550,638. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, LEIGH STANLEY Baone, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bound Brook, county of Somerset, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vindow-Fasteners, of which the following isa speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to improvements in window-fasteners; and its object is to provide a simple device adapted to be arranged in a window-casing and which can be operated to maintain each of the window-sashes at any desired position securely locked; and with these and other ends in View the invention contemplates a suitable box or frame adapted to be arranged within a window frame or casing, a sliding plate within said box having a toothed rack and two bolts extending through the box, a segment arranged to engage with the rack, and a spring-controlled bar secured to the segment and adapted to operate the same to throw the bolts into engagement with one of a series of openings in the windowsashes.
In the accompanying' drawings, Figure l is a front view, partly in section, of a window frame or casing provided with my improved fastener, also showing the window-sashes and the method of the operation of the lock or fastener. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on the line fr oc of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the lock or fastener. Fig. 4t is a transverse sectional view on the line y y of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a top plan View of the lock or fastener slightly modified.
In the practice of my invention I provide a box or frame A, having the side plates a a. rlhis box is arranged in a suitable recess in the window-casing, as illustrated in Fig. l, and the front plate a thereof is preferably countersunk to lie iiush with the face of the casing. A bar B is arranged in the box and it has the enlarged hubs h b, which form suitable bearing-surfaces in the openin gs of the sides of the box. The bar also has a head h outside of the box to receive a key b2, by means of which the device is manipulated,
A segor the key may be secured thereon.
ment O is rigidly secured on the bar B within the box and it is provided with the teeth c, for a purpose hereinafter described. A plate D is arranged loosely within the box parallel with the front thereof, and it is provided with bolts (l, which project through the openings cZ in the front of the box, and also an extension E, having a rack c on the under side thereof, which is engaged by the toothed segment O.
In the edge of both of the window-sashes F are a number, more or less, of horizontal holes f, adapted to receive the bolts d, and these bolts are maintained in the holes normally by means of a spring G, arranged on the bar B.
In the operation of my device the key, if made removable, is applied to the head of the bar and turned until the bolts are withdrawn from the holes, and the window-sashes can then be adjusted to the desired position, after which the key may be removed, and the spring G causes the bar to rock and the segment engages the rack e and causes the plate to move forward and the bolts to enter the holes j' in the sashes. When the lower sash is lowered and the upper one raised, the device will securely fasten the same, because the bolt cannot possibly be withdrawn without using the key or its equivalent.
It will be observed that with my improved lock the window-sashes must be locked together lin any position in which they are placed, and that they must be locked closedthat is, with the upper one in the highest position and the lower one in the lowest position-or either sash may be open and the other closed, and by reason of this arrangement both of the bolts of the lock are always in operation and concealed and cannot be operated except with the key.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a window-fastener the combination of a box, a bar arranged therein and having enlarged hubs, a head on said bar outside the box adapted to receive a key a toothed segment secured on the bar, a plate movably arranged within the box parallel with the front thereof, an extension on said plate close to the top of the box, a rack on the under side IOO on said extension to mesh with the toothed myinventon Ihave signed my name, in pressegment, bolts rigid with the plate and adaptence of the subsoribingwitnosses, this 22d day Io @l to operate through an opening in the front 0f May, 1895. o the box, to enter one of the series of o en- 1 T t Y 5 ings in eaoh windowsztsh, and t spring on LEICTH SlANLB BAL'HE' the bar for holding said bolt normally in said NVtnessos: holo, substantially as shown and described. R. H. BROKAW,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as A. CLICKENER.
