Description
,I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
t i ISAAC LEWINE, OF NEV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND MAR- GARET M. PIPER.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTON ATTACHMENTS POR APPAREL.-
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,798, dated June 19, 1866.
To all 'whom it may concern: 5f" Be it known that I, ISAAC LEWINE, of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Fastening for Victorines, Capes, or other Furs usuall y f worn by ladies and gentlemen; and I do hereby declare the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l represents a front View of my invention as applied to a ladys Victorine Fig. 2, a View representing the same expanded or drawn apart for Ventilating the body of the wearer, vand exhibiting said fastening; Fig. 3, au interior view of fastenings of cape 5 Fig. (l, a plan ofthe fastening, in connection with the v.tay-pieces; and Fig. 5, a section through the astening, showing mode of vattaching button nd elastic cord.
The nature of my invention consists in producing a fastening for victorines, capes, or other furs, or like articles composed of cloth, usually worn by ladies and gentlemen, whereby the Victorine, Sto., will not only expand and contract at the points of connection (thus easing the respiratory motions ofthe body of the wearer) by means of my improved fastening, L it can (should the cape become uncomfortably warm) be drawn apart or expanded to any desired distance for the purpose of Ventilating the body of the wearer without undoing the fastening.
In the said drawings, A represents a ladys Victorine; B B the parts of same which are united by my improved fastening. C C are i strips or stay-pieces attached to the parts B B for reception ofthe fastening, said strips or stay- K pieces having metallic eyelets, through which the stems of the buttons D D pass, and are fastened by split or snap rings E E in the usual manner. F Fare elastic cords or loops fastened to the parts C and passing through the eyelets and over the buttons D D, thus completing my improved fastening.
It is well known that the ordinary fastening for furs, composed of a button attached to the the skin, rendering the same unsightly anddicult to repair; nor will such fastening provide for the respiratory motion or ventilation of the body without undoing such fastening, often resulting in the loss of the fur cape; but the application of m yin ven tion to fur capes, cloaks, Stc., as well as to like articles composed of cloth, obviates these difficulties, for the buttons as well as the elastic cord being attached to the cloth or material on which the skin or fur is laid will not be torn (dragging with thema portion of the skin and fur) from the cape, because of the elasticity of the loops, as well as the secure attachment of both loops and buttons to the groundwork or solid portion of the cape or cloak7 and if requisite a button may be replaced without injury to the garment; and my improved fastening will adjust itself to the more or less bulky undergarments, the respiratory motions, and ventilation of the body of the wearer without undoing the fast` ening, and consequently without injury to or danger of losing the cape or cloak.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'Ihc combination of the elastic loops F F and buttons D D, both attached to the garment by eyelets in stay-pieces, substantially as and for the purposes herein specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature.
ISAAC LEWIN E.
Witnesses A. NEILL, ROBERT B. WHITE.
