SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,873, dated March 24, 1896.

Application filed January 1 8, 189 6 To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LUTHER ll. VAN ZANDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort forth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Brush, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to brushes for use with water subject to pressure and which can be used for scrubbing floors, walls, or ceilings, washing horses, buggies, &c., and for cleaning carcasses of slaughtered animals.

Other objects and advantages will be fully understood from the following description and claim when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts in both views.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the brush and showing a section of the pipe. Fig. 2 is aside elevation showing positions of the port and the valve.

E indicates the handle. The handle has recesses L L for convenience in holding the brush and a recess is also cut in the end for the pipe to prevent any lateral motion of the pipe.

F indicates the pipe, which is attached to the friction side of the handle by means of lugs O, O, and D, fastened to the handle by means of screws H, H, and H. These lugs are. made integral with pipe F. The lug D is made beveling so that it will wedge the handle against the pipe. The pipe is arranged and shaped so that it can be readily attached to an ordinary hose.

G indicates the bristles in Fig. 2, and in Fig. l the position of the bristles is indicated by dotted circles, two rows on each side of the pipe.

M indicates the connection for an ordinary hose.

J indicates a cutoff valve having a handle K projecting over the brush.

13 indicates the perforations in the pipe for allowing the water to escape. These perforations are arranged on the side of the pipe away from the handle so that the water will be always thrown through the bristles to the Serial No. 576,023. (No model.)

The handle of the valve is so arranged that the valve can be opened whenever desired by simply turning the handle with the finger without having to release the brush-handle. By this means when the under surfaces of objects are to be washed water can be thrown to these surfaces just as readily as it can be thrown to top or side surfaces.

The handle K is shown broken away. It is to be made to extend over the brush-handle far enough to be in easy reach of the finger.

The brush is described as having bristles G. Palmetto or other suitable material can be used. Palmetto possesses the advantage of becoming pliable when wet, so that smooth surfaces will not be scratched by it.

The brush not only has a reservoir for holding water, but its reservoir can be connected with the hose of water-works or of water of higher elevation than the object to be scrubbed or cleaned.

It will be seen that I have invented a brush by which water can be supplied at the point of friction on any surface and in any position.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A brush for use with water under hydraulic or other pressure consisting of a handle E, having slots L, and L, for convenient grasping, a pipe F, having perforations B, lugs O, O, and beveled lug D, made integral with said pipe, said lug D, wedging said handle against said pipe, said pipe extending the whole length of the friction side of said brush and through a recess in one end of said handle and being attached to said handle by means of screws or bolts, bristles or other suitable material inserted in said handle on each side of said pipe, a connection M, for attaching said pipe to a convenient hose, a cut-off valve J, operating in said connection, and a handle K, for operating said valve.
