H. W. COOPER. TRACE CARRIER- No. 555,678. Patented Mar. 3, 1896'.
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT IV. COOPER, OF MOLINE, ILLINOIS.
TRACE-CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,678, dated March 3, 1896. Application filed November '7, 1893. $erial No. 490,228- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT W. COOPER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Moline, county of Rock Island, and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in lraceCarriers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable those skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in trace-carriers. The trace-carrier has a base with the lateral portions B and B rising therefrom and forming an opening for the reception of the cockeye of the trace, the hooks D and D projecting downward from the lateral portion for engaging and holding the cockeye and the cross-bar G for uniting and holding the lateral portions, and A and A the extensions of the cross-bar C beyond the lateral portions B and B projecting over the opening into which the cockeyes upon the end of the traces are inserted at substantially right angles to the direction of the hooks D and D, and thereby forming a look by which the traces When hooked into the carrier are cockeyes on the end of the traces are inserted in hooking the traces into the carriers. Heretofore trace-carriers have been constructed without this extension and have therefore been defective on account of the traces becoming unhooked and falling from the carrier. It is clearly seen that this defect will be completely obviated by extending the crossbar O beyond the lateral portions B and B, so that such extensions shall project over the openings in which the cockeyes on the ends of the traces are inserted in hooking the traces into the carriers, as I have done.
I do not limit myself to a single extension or to any particular form or design of extension 0 in thus locking the traces in the carrier.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The trace-carrier having the base, the lateral portions B rising therefrom and forming openings for the reception of the cockeye of the trace; the hooks D projecting downward from the ,lateral portions for engaging and holding the cockeye; the cross-bar C uniting the lateral portions and the extensions of O projecting over the openings at substantially right angles to the direction of the hooks, all as shown and described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of November, A. D. 1893.
HERBERT W. COOPER.
