' W. R. JOHNS.
TRACE CARRIER.
No. 337,957. Patented Mar. 16, 1886.
WZ7LLJ .9 as,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILL R. JOHNS, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO FRANK M. ROWE AND ROOKWOOD SAGER,
TRACE-CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 337,957, dated March 16, 1886.
Application filed April '21, 1885.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, \VILL R. JOHNS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Rockford, in the county of \Vinnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trace-Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to harness-trimmings, but more especially to that part thereof em- IO ployed to connect the front and rear portions of the back-strap and the hip-straps of the harness, and when fitted for the purpose is known as the trace-carrier.
Its object is to produce a trace-carrier of a construction to freely receive the cock-eye of the trace in a manner to practically prevent accidental displacement. To this end I have designed and constructed the carrier represented in the accompanying drawings, in
which Figure 1 is an under face representation of a trace-carrier embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section on dotted line or on Fig. 1.
The base portion of the carrier produced in elliptical or oblong skeleton form in plan in substantially the same plane, and provided with loops A to receive the back-straps and loops B to receive the hip-straps of the harness, and end bars, 0, connecting the side bars of the base inside of the hipstrap loops, also the end arching portions, D, and the bar E, connecting their crowning portions spanning the space between the end arches, D, forming the main frame, are substantially the same as carriers now in use. Trace-supporting hooks F,springing from the central portion of the connecting end bars, 0, rise in a suitable arching or curv- Renewed February 11, 1886. Serial No. 191,650.

ing form inward under the end arch bars, D, with their free ends extending toward each. 0 other and depending toward the plane of the base of the skeleton frame. The conformation of these hooks and their position relatively with the arching bars D are such as to permit the passage of the cock-eyeHof the trace over its free end and to support it in its outer upward curving portion.
The trace-supporting hooks F toward their free end, at or near the point of their passage under the arched bars D, are provided with fiukes or lateral projections I, operating in connection with the arched bars D, to prevent accidental disconnection of the cock-eye.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a trace-carrier with books rising from the frame 5 5 of the carrier to engage the cock-eyes of the traces, and hence I make no claim to that feature, broadly considered; but my invention comprehends an improved construction that will prevent accidental displacement or dis- 6o engagement of the trace from the carrier.
I claim In a trace-carrier, the combination, with the end bars, and with the end arches, of a tracecarrying hook whose main portion is inwardly curved, and whose end depends toward the plane of the base of the frame, and a fluke or projection arranged upon the hook, to operate in connection with the adjacent end arch, to prevent accidental displacement of the trace, substantially as set forth.
WILL R. JOHNS.
