Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. l-Linsrr, citizen of the United States, residing at lVabash, in the county of Wabash and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein or Neck-Strap Lino-Terrets; and I do declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to harness, but more particularly to a rein or neck strap line terret, and has for its object to provide a device of his class which will keep the reins or lines in line with the bit and which will prevent the reins or lines from falling or hanging down and catching on the shafts or portions of the harness.

With this object in view my invention consists in the novel construction of terretwhich provides for inserting the rein or line in the terret without passing the end of line or rein through the terret as would be necessary in the use of a solid ring, and my invention consists in the novel construction of the terret for guarding against an accidental disengagement of the rein or line from the terret.

Referring to the accompanying drawin Figure 1 is a perspective view of terret in position on neck strap showing rein or line in position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of terret showing rein or line within terret in normal position in dotted lines and illustrating how rein or line is held in terret against accidental disengagement, and Fig. l is an end elevation of terret showing manner of inserting rein or line.

Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures in which:

Having thus fully described the several parts of my invention its operation is as follows: As will be seen from Fig. 2 the post (3 and bar 9 cross each other, the head of the post extending above the bar 9, and the head of the bar 9 extending beyond the post 6. This construction is a material feature of my invention as will now appear. in order to insert the rein or line within the terret, the said rein or line is turned back upon itself as shown in Fig. i so as to conform to the curved side 8 of the post 6. \Vhen the rein or line is inserted in this manner and. carried past the post 6 it straightens out as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. lVhen the rein or line becomes slack it of course plays loosely within the terret and unless provision is made for holding the rein or line within the terret, the same is very liable to become accidentally disengaged. By reason of the particular construction I employ, that is by crossing the ends or heads of the post 6 and bar 9, an accidental disengagement of the line or rein is practically impossible. As in order to disengage the rein or line from the terret, the same has to be bent into position shown in Fig. 4 which never occurs in practice. The nearest to this position which the rein or line can take is substantially as shown in full lines in Fig. 3, in which posit-ion the extending end or head 7 effectually prevents the rein or line from becoming disengaged, while the enlarged end or head 11 of the bar 9 engages the rein or line as shown in Fig. 3 and renders it impossible for the rein or line to pass said end or head until the rein or line is in position shown in Fig. 4.

While this terret effectually prevents an accidental disengagement of the rein or line it at the same time provides for manually inserting and disengaging the rein or line instantly as the rein or line has only to be bent into position shown in Fig. 4t to insert or disengage the same.

It is seen in Figs. 3 and 4t that the curved side 8 of the post 6 forms an arc of a circle, which embraces the enlarged head 11 of the bar 9 Within its compass.

As will be seen from the drmvings, the bar 9 crosses the post 6 at right angles to said post and extends beyond the same in a straight line. By reason of this construction the normal direction which the rein assumes while Within the terret does not have to be altered in order to remove from or insert the rein in the terret, but it is simply necessary to bend the rein back upon itself over the bar 9 as shown in Fig. 4C and by moving the rein laterally remove the same from the terret.

Having thus fully described my invention, I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction herein set forth as various slight changes may be made therein which would fall Within the limit and scope of my invention, and l consider myself clearly entitled to all such changes and modifications.

lVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

A rein or line terret comprising a base, a post extending from said base, a bar on said base, said bar passing over said base and crossing along side of said post and extending beyond the said post in a straight line, the end of said bar and of said post being enlarged in such manner that to insert a rein or line between said bar and said post the rein or line must be bent to conform to the form of said post, the Whole arranged whereby a rein or line may be removed from the terret Without altering the direction in which the rein or line normally lies.
