HARNESS BUCKLE.
APPLICATION IILED AUG. 10. 1906.
Inventor,
f Witnesses: W
I By M I I I Attorneys UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE IRA SELLERS, OF EDMONTON, ALBERTA, CANADA.
HARNE SS-B UGKLE To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRA SELLERS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Edmonton, in the Province of Alberta, ()anada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Buckles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to harness buckles; the object of my invention is to provide a buckle especially adapted for fastening a crupper to the breeching of a harness; and, my invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as herein illustrated, described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, I have illustrated one form of embodiment of my invention, in which drawings similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view showing the application of my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a buckle; and, Fig. 3 is a side eleva tion of a rockable hook forming part of the buckle.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the breeching and 2 the crupper strap. The breeching is provided with openings 3 adj acent one edge, and a single opening 4 adjacent the opposite edge, and the crupper strap 2 is of ordinary bifurcated construction.
The buckle proper comprises a plate 5, having on one edge at its ends integral hooks 6, adapted to be disposed through the openings 3 of the breeching, and having on its under face calks 7 adapted to bear on the bifurcated ends of the crupper strap 2. The plate 5 is provided with a rectangular opening 8 adjacent its edge opposite to the hooks 6, and centrally of its length.
- An insertible member 9 is disposed in the opening 8, and provided with a notch 10 adapted to engage the wall of said opening, and is provided at its opposite end with an integral hook 11 adapted to be inserted through the opening 4 in the breeching 1. The member 9 is further provided with a recess 12, adapted to fit over the edge of the plate 5 adjacent the opening 8. A guard lug 13 on the member 9 is adapted to be bent away to permit the insertion of the edge of the plate 5, and to be bent back to maintain the member 9 rockably in the recess 12.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 10. 1906. Serial No. 329,977.
Patented Feb. 4, 1908.3
The end of the member 9 being inserted into the opening 8 of the plate 5, the notch 10 will engage the wall of the opening, and the guard lug 13 will contact with the breeching 1, and the member 9 will be held in the position shown in Fig. 3, thus locking the plate 5 to the breeching 1, and forcing the calks 7 into engagement with the bifurcated end of the crupper strap, the hooks 6 being inserted through the openings 3 and 4 respectively. The shoulder 14 on the member 9 serves to maintain the wall of the opening 8 in position. To release the strap 2, a pull on the hook 11 in the direction indicated by the ar row 15 of Fig. 2, will move the wall of the openin 8 from between the shoulder 14 and the wall of the recess 12, and will permit a slight rocking of the member 9. When the member 9 is rocked, the notch 10 is withdrawn from engagement with the wall of the opening 8, and the )late 5 may be swung away from the breecliing 1 on the hooks 6, carryin the calks 7 away from the crupper strap. The crupper strap 2 may then be easily slipped to the desired position.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is2- 1. In a harness buckle, a plate provided with hooks and with an opening, and an insertible member disposed in the opening and provided with a hook extending beyond the edge of the plate.
2. In a harness buckle, a plate provided with hooks and with an opening, and an insertible rockable member disposed in the opening and provided with a hook extending beyond the edge of the plate.
3. In a harness buckle, a plate provided with hooks and with an opening, and an insertible rockable member disposed in the opening and provided with a hook extending beyond the edge of the plate and with means to prevent its rocking.
4. In a harness buckle, a plate provided with hooks adjacent one edge and provided with an opening adjacent its opposite edge, and an insertiblc member provided with a recess in which the wall of the opening is (lisposed and provided with a hook extending beyond the edge of the plate. I
5. In a harness buckle, a plate provided with hooks adjacent one edge and provided with an opening adjacent its opposite edge, and an insertible member provided with a recess in which the wall of the opening is disposed and provided With a hook and proengaging the Wall Of the opening, and means vided With a guard lug engaging the under for attaching to a part of the harness. 10 face of the plate. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my 6. In a harness buckle, a plate provided hand in the presence of two Witnesses. with means for attaching to a part of the har- IRA SELLERS. ness, provided With an opening, and pre- Witnesses: 5 'vided with calks on its under face, and an in- JAMES FRANKLIN WRIGHTJ sertible member provided with means for l JOHN KILLEN.
