Description

UNITED STATES ATENT EEICE.
ELAM ALPHEUS OLIVER, OF BELLEVILLE, WISCONSIN.
BAN D-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 555,524, dated March 3, 1896. Application filed August 20, 1895. Serial No. 559,932. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELAM ALPHEUs OLIVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belleville, in the county of Dane and State of Visconsin, have invented a newV and useful Band-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to band-fasteners, particularly such as are to be used on tanks, vats, casks, and barrels; and it has for its object to produce a fastener and tightener that is rigid and unyieldin g, sure in operati on, quickly and easily adjusted, and simple in construction.
The invention herein set forth is an im provement on the device patented to me May 8, 1894, and numbered 519,507; and it consists in the various details and combination of parts hereinafter set forth by description and claim.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of one of the coupling members, and Fig. 4 is a further detail thereof.
The reference-numeral1 designates the ordinary band surrounding the barrel or other receptacle, which band is to be tightened and its ends fastened by my device. This device or fastener consists of two duplicate members, each consisting of an inclosing box, a sliding cap and wedge, a directing or controlling extension and a retaining corrugation. These two members are clamped together or adj usted toward each other by means of a bolt and tightening-nuts. The box 2 is made to conform to the bolt 3 so as to embrace the same snugly above and on either side, thus forming an arched top in cross-section and of longitudinal dimension sufficient to stiften and direct said bolt. The lower portion is made to conform to the band to be fastened, which in this case is a broad flat band, so that the box is projected below its arched top and extended outwardly so as to form a rectangular passage therethrough. This passage is formed by the walls 5 5 and bottom 6, which are preferably integral with each other and with the top. Near the inner end of the box and extending transversely on the bottom is araised portion, bead, or oorrugation 7, over which the end of the band passes and is bent or crimped by the wedge 8. rIhis wedge 8 consists of an upturned lug 9, perforated to loosely receive the l bolt 3, and alaterally-extending projection or follower 10, adapted to enter freely above and in contact with the band in the aforesaid passage and to nearly abut against the corrugation 7. As a further means to secure rigidity and direct longitudinal strain onthe bolt and band, the outer end of the bottom is prolonged to form the extension 12, which may be tapered to a thin outer edge and is adapted to lie beneath the strained band and against the barrel-staves. The clamping-bolt is preferably threaded at either end 13 13 and provided with tightening-nuts 14.
The operation of my device is exceedingly simple. One end of the band is inserted preferably liush with the inner end of the box and wedge is inserted above the same, which tends to clamp and bend the same over the corrugation 7. Then the other end of the band is similarly placed, its free end extending through the box as far as necessary, the wedge is adjusted, and the parts are brought together by screwing up the nuts 14 until the desired tension is secured.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new is A band-fastener consisting of a pair of duplicate fastening members, each comprising a rectangular box, the inner side of which is provided directly adjacent to one end with a transverse rib or bead, and at the end opposite said rib or bead with a tapered extension adapted to lie against the inner side of the strained band, and a tapered wedge-plate arranged within the box and provided at one end with a right-angularly disposed perforated lug arranged parallel with and outside of one end of the box and adapted to form a stop, the opposite end of said wedge-plate projecting to a point directly at one side of said transverse rib or bead to form a crimp in the band which en gages with said rib orbead, and a single bolt having its opposite end portions lying within the box and engaging the perforated lugs of the wedge-plates arranged therein, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ELAM ALPIIEUS OLIVER.
