ADVERTISING SIGN HOLDER.
No. 554,857. Patented Feb. '18, 1896.-
UNITED STATES WVILLARD H. BOND, OF WATERTOIVN, AND THOMAS 'L. BARLOW, OF BOSTON,
PATENT OFFICE.
MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNORS TO THE BARLOWV MANUFACTURING COM- PANY.
ADVERTISING-SIGN HOLDER.
. SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,857, dated February 18, 1896.
Application filed July 5, 1895, Serial No. 554,971. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLARD H. BOND, of Watertown, in the county of Middlesex, and THOMAS L. BARLOW, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising-Sign Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to holders for advertising-signs,such as are exhibited in shop-windows, on counters, and elsewhere for advertising purposes; and it has for its object to provide a simple and convenient device of ornamental appearance adapted to hold a sign of any desired size.
The invention consists in a sign-holder composed of a standard, and two arms having means for attachment to the standard and formed to engage the upper and lower edges of a sheet of cardboard or other like material constituting the sign, one or both of said arms being adjustable, so that a sign of any desired width may be held between them.
Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of our improved signholder. Fig. 2 represents an end view of the same with a sign applied to the holder. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view of a modification. Fig. lrepresents a'perspective view of a modification.
The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.
In the drawings, a represents a standard which is or may be a cylindrical metal rod or tube affixed to a suitable base a, by which it may be supported in a vertical position, the base resting on a store-counter or other support.
I) b represent arms, the central portions of which are connected with the standard, preferably by means of sleeves b b affixed to the central portions of said arms, said sleeves having means, such as setscrews 12 6 whereby they may be affixed to the standard at any desired distance apart. The arms I) b are offset from the standard, as shown in Fig. 2, and
. are adapted to be engaged with the upper and lower edges of a sign 0. Said arms are pref= erably tubular in form, each having a longitudinal slot b the upper arm having a slot in its lower portion, while the lower arm has a slot in its upper portion. Said slots receive the upper and lower edges of the sign, as shown in Fig. 2.
It will be seen that the arms I) b may be affiXed to the standard at any desired distance apart, so that they may hold signs of any desired width within the range of adjustment afforded by the length of the tube. The arms may be engaged by friction with the standard, if desired.
In Fig. 3 we show the sleeves I) provided with spring-fingers Z2 which grasp the stand ard and maintain a frictional hold thereon.
The arms 6 may be provided with projecting tongues or clips 25 tto engage the edges of the sign, as shown in Fig. 4.
The standard a may be jointed to the base and provided with a set-screw n or other holding device, whereby it may be locked in a vertical position or at any desired angle of inclination.
The arms I) may be arranged in pairs, two arms being attached side by side to each sleeve 17, so that two signs'inay be held at opposite sides of the standard.
We claim 1. A sign-holder comprising a standard, and two arms each having a sleeve for embracing the standard, and means for adjustably securing one or both of said sleeves to the standard, one of said arms having a sign-receiving slot or recess in its lower portion, while the other arm has a similar slot or recess in its upper portion.
2. A sign-holder comprising a supportingbase, a standard jointed to the base, means for locking the standard to the base in different positions, and two transverse arms adjustably secured on the standard and having means for engaging two opposite edges of a s gn.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 27th day of June, A. D. 1895.
