wlmssss: 5 I I mvmran 551% fiw/rl, \fi By 5 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BYRON SIIOTVVELL GALLOIVAY, OF GREAT BEND, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOLDER FOR PENS AND PENCILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 554,257, dated February 11, 1896.
Application filed June 25,1895.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BYRON SHorwnLL GAL- LOWAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Great Bend, county of Susquehanna, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Pens and Pencils, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to pens and pencils, and particularly to holders therefor, and the object thereof is to produce a holder for a pencil or a combination-holder for pens and pencils, and which is simple in form and construction, and may easily be carried in the pocket.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, and in which- Figure 1 represents in side elevation a penholder with rubber attachment forming part of my invention; Fig. 2, a similar view of the combined pen and pencil holder with the pencil in position for use; Fig. 3, a View of the holder alone, and Fig. 4 a modification thereof.
In the practice of my invention I employ a tubular casing or holderA of the form shown in Fig. 3, one end of which is bifurcated, as shown at O, and the ends of the separate sides are provided with outwardly-directed points or projections D.
The holder is composed of spring metal, and the cylindrical end thereof is adapted to receive a tubular penholder E, as shown in Fig. 1, to the closed end of which is secured or may be secured a rubber attachment F.
As shown in the drawings, the rubber attachment F is set into the closed end of the tubular penholder E, biit this attachment may be connected with said holder in any desired manner, and the pen G is connected with the holder by the usual means, and the end of said penholder to which the pen is attached is also bifurcated or divided, as shown in Fig. 1.
The purpose of the annular bead B is to prevent the pencil II from being inserted into Serial No. 553,982. (No model.)
the holder far enough to interfere with or strike the pen. The outwardly directed points or projections D are designed to retain the holder in the pocket and prevent the ac cidental removal thereof.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a modified form of apencil-holder independent of the penholder, which is provided with but one side arm or extension D, and which, as will be understood, will operate to hold the pencil and holder in the pocket, as hereinbefore described.
It is apparent that the penholder E may be inserted into the holder A, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, in which position the pencil and rubber will be ready for use, or the penholder may be reversed, in which position the pen may be used, as will be readily understood, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive.
It will be observed that changes in and modifications of the form, construction and combination of the various parts of my invention, as shown and described, in ay be made without departing from the spirit thereof or sacrificing its advantages, and I therefore reserve the right to make such alterations as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
I-Iaving fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The combination of a tubular holder A, having one end 0 bifurcated and provided with outwardly-directed projections D, an annular bead B, midway of the holder, and a tubular penholder E, adapted to fit snugly in the other end of the holder A and having one end thereof bifurcated, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 22d day of June, 1895.
BYRON SHO'IWELL GALLOWAI'.
IVitnesses:
B. S. BEEBE, D. W FREDENBURG.
