ERASING ATTACHMENT FOR PENHOLDERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 473,423, dated April 19, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK B. KRAUSE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Erasing Attachments for Penholders, of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in erasing attachments for penholders, and it is especially designed for the purpose of combining in one device means for erasing, rubbing, and for smoothing over the surface thus roughened.

My invention consists of a metal sleeve provided with an integral knife-eraser and a smoothing device and in the details of construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an edge View of the eraser in position upon a penholder. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a modified form, and Fig. 4 is a vertical central section with internal sleeve.

narrow neck a. This sleeve is adapted to be placed over the smooth extremity of a penholder, as D, so as to be convenient for use at any time.

In Fig. 1 the blade is seen to be extended in the axial line of the cylinder, and on either side thereof are riveted the shallow cups 1) and c by the connecting-rivet A Within these cups are driven the cylindrical pieces B and 0, one of which is composed of ivoryor some other hard substance, and is adapted to rub down and smooth over the roughened surface left by scratching with the blade. The opposite cup is filled with a piece of hard india-rubber or other cleansing material to rub off inkmarks or dirt.

In Fig. 3 the form shown omits the rubber and cup at one side of the blade, the ob ect being to enable the blade to be brought flat against the paper. On the other side the ivory piece and retaining-cup are left, the ivory protruding sufficiently far beyond the cylinder A for use as a rubber or smoother.

In Fig. 4 is seen an inner sleeve E, which is used as a lining to the outer shell when the extremity of the penholder is too small to fill the outer sleeve A. Thisinner sleeve is made of elastic material, so that it can be made to secure a variety of sizes'of penholders in the outer sleeve.

I do not claim the exact size of any of the parts, but prefer to make the sleeve A and blade A of hardened steel, in one piece, although they may be joined together.

What I claim, therefore, as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In an erasing attachment for a penholder, the combination of a metal sleeve of spring metal adapted to be secured to the extremity of a penholder and provided with an integral erasing-blade extending therefrom axially and one or more cups secured to the blade, each cup containing a smoothing or erasing substance, substantially as described.

2. The combination, in an erasive attachment for a penholder, of a sleeve A, blade A,

integral therewith, a rivet A and one or morecups B or 0, provided with erasing or smoothing material, substantially as described.

3. In an erasive attachmentfor apenholder, the combination of a hardened-metal erasingblade rigidly secured to a detachable sleeve adapted to be placed on a penholder and one or more cups secured to the blade, each cup being provided with a block of erasive or smoothing material, substantially as described.
