Be it known that I, LEWIS O. IVILSON, residing at Charleston, in the county of Kanawha and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is in the nature of an improvement in locks of that class known as knob-locks and its objects are to simplify and cheapen the lock, to render it much more easily applied to doors by simply boring a hole instead of mort-ising in its edge, and to provide a lock which can only be unlocked from the inside.
It consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts for accomplishing the above results, which I will now proceed to more fully describe with reference to the drawings, in which- Figure l is a side view of the lock applied to a door with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is an edge view. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section through line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through line 4 4 of Fig. l.
In the drawings, A represents the door, in whose edge is bored a hole to receive a cylindrical barrel B made in one piece with one end closed and the other open and having slots b in its side opposite a transverse hole in the door. Vithin this barrel there slides a bolt C, which is forced outwardly by a spiral spring c located in the barrel behind the end of the bolt. This bolt is round except at its outer reduced end, which protrudes beyond the doors edge, leaving a shoulder s, and this end is made in the usual way with a beveled face on one side to engage the catoliplate on the door-jamb. D is a face-plate which is sunken flush within the edge of the door, and through which face-plate the end of the bolt protrudes and plays freely back and forth under the tension of the spiral spring,the shoulders of the bolt acting against the plateas a stop. This face-plate is made in outline in the forni of three circles joined together so as to permit the countersunk recess for the same to be made by boring with a bit, there being two shallow holes about one-eighth of an inch deep, one on each side of the receiving-hole which accommodates the barrel. This face-plate is secured by screws at c c'.
The bolt C has a hole c2 in which is inserted a transverse bar E by which the bolt is retracted. This bar protrudes into a plate F applied to the side of the door, which has a slot CZ to give passage to said bar. Within this plate there plays an oscillating crankarln G fast upon a knob-shaft II and having in its end a slot e to receive the end of the retractin g-bar E. Now when the knob is turned it will be seen that the crank-arm G is turned with it and the bolt drawn back through the retracting-bar E.
To lock the knob-shaft and bolt so that they cannot be moved I extend the frame-plate F some distance below the knob, and in the extension I arrange in suitable guides a vertical bolt I, which is adapted to be thrown upwardly and into a recess f in the hub of the crank-arm, so that the crankarm cannot be turned. This bolt I is provided with a spiral spring g, which surrounds it and bears against its square lower end to force it downwardly, and the lower end of the bolt is forked or spread out at 7L and straddles an eccentric or tumbler cam J, which is fast upon a knobshaft K whose knob projects outside of the plate and is accessible to the fingers. Then this knob is turned so as to throw the tumbler-cam J into a vertical position, as shown in dotted lines, the bolt I is raised and is made to enter the locking-recess in the crankhub. The vertical position of the locking-tumbler is maintained by the shape of the chamber in the casing or frame-plate, whose side 7c forms a bearing against which the tumbler lies and by which it is supported in its vertical posi tion.
The casing or frame-plate F is preferably made in two sections, one of which lies flat against the surface of the door and the other of which forms a covering or face plate, which may be cast or struck up in any ornamental shape. The frame-plate F also has a detachw able bearing-bar I. for the axes of the knob and tumbler-shaft, which bar is let in flush with the surface of the said plate.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to place a barrel with a spring-bolt in a cavity formed in the edge of the door by boring, and

I do not claim this broadly, but only my special construction and arrangement of parts.
I am also aware that a knob-shaft has been locked by a vertical bolt on the outside of a door operated by a key below the knob, and I disclaim also this broad idea.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A knob lock consisting of a cylindrical barrel with a slot in its side, a spring acting bolt arranged therein and having a transverse hole, a retracting bar E arranged in this hole,
a frame plate F on the outside of the door with slot d receiving the end of the retracting bar, a knob shaft II with rigidly attached crank G arranged outside the door and having slot e in its end also receiving the end of the retracting bar, all combined substantialb as shown and described.
2. The combination with the knob shaft;
of a vertical spring-locking bolt having its lower end bifurcated or spread out, a subjacent tumbler cam J with axial shaft and knob K, and the casing having a rest or bearing support k for the tumbler cam when lifting the locking bolt, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination withthe knobshaft having crank G for actuating the main bolt, said crank having a recess f in its hub portion, a vertical bolt I, a spiral spring g, the tumbler cam J arranged beneath the lower end of thebolt and provided with an axial shaft and knob K, and the frame plate or casing having a rest or support 7a for the tunibler cam, substantially as shown and described.
