ject to provide novel, simple, and inexpensive details of construction in a device of the indicated character which adapts the slidable latch-bolt thereof to serve as a lockingbolt and which can only be operated from the outer side of the door by a suitable key.
The invention consists in the novel coninafter described, and defined in the claims. Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding .parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side view of the lock with one side wall of the case removed, exposing the working parts of the lock. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view substantially on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan View taken substantially on the line 3 3 in Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view substantially on the line 4. 4 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 isa fragmentary sectional plan view taken substantially on the line 5 5 in Fig. l.
The lock-casing 6 shown in the drawings is for a class of locks known as mortiselocks, which in service occupy recesses formed to receive them in the free vertical edges of doors; but it is to be understood that a lock-case may be employed which is adapted for exterior attachment upon the inner side of a door, if this' is desired, and in either case one side wall 6a of the casing is made removable and securable in place by a single screw a. On the limb of the L- shaped lever 7, which projects in a nearlyhorizontal plane toward Vthe faceplate 6", a gravity-block 7a is formed or secured, and said block normally rests upon a projection c, that is an integral formation on the upper edge of the locking-bolt 8. The bolt S slides Yback and forth through the face-plate G and carries a cross-pin d, which contacts loosely with the sides of the casing G, said pin being positioned below and nearly in vertical alinement with the projection c and serving to `insure a correct reciprocation of the locking bolt.
Two spaced lugs e c are formed laterally on the locking-bolt S nearits inner end, and between these lugs a keyhole f is formed oppositely in the side walls of the casing 6 to receive a suitably-shaped key 9 from either side of the lock-case, said key by manipulation being adapted to throw the bolt 8 back or forth, as may be desired, by the contact of its bit with an appropriate lug c or e' for locking or unlocking the bolt 8.
Two spaced notches g g are formed in the lower edge of the locking-bolt 8, and either of said notches will loosely receive the body of a cross-bar 71., which is a fixture on the casing 6, and is so positioned that the notch g will receive it when the bolt 8 is thrown fully outward by the key 9 and the other notch g will receive said cross-bar when the locking-bolt is fully retracted.
On the upper extremity of the upright limb 7b ot the L-shaped lever 7 the inner end of the latch-bolt 10 is pivoted, as at k, the oppo- Vsite end or latching-nose 10SL thereon working `loosely through the face-plate 6b when the latch-bolt is reciprocated.
As shown in Figs. l and 3, a shoulder t' is formed on the upper side of the latch-bolt 10 behind the latching-nose 10, and alike shoulder may also be provided on the lower side of said latch-bolt opposite the upper one. A locking-dog l1 is pivoted'in the side Walls of the casing 6 above the latch-bolt 10, and on the pivot-shaft of said dog, which extends through the side wall of the lock-casing which is innermost when in place on a door, a short lever ll is secured, which by manipulation will rock said pivot-shaft and cause the free end of the dog l1 to 'engage withA the upper shoulder i or be retracted therefrom, as may IOO The latch-bolt when unshackled is adapted for retraction from either side of the door by the knob-spindle 12, that is represented in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, said spindle in complete form having aknob offany preferred design4 mounted on each end andv secured thereon, as usual. When the cam-head 15a is rocked to lift the tumbler-fingers 14, the longer and thinner portion of the tripping-arm 15 will pass behind the body of the latch-bolt 10 and at the free end thereof impinge upon the forward edge of the upright arm 13", so as to rock it away from the notches in the tu mbler-ingers 14 simultaneously with the release of said arm from engagement with the notches, as indicatedb'y dotted lines in Fig.' 1.
In some constructions of the lock it maybe preferred to dispense with knobs on the spindie 12 and simply journal itin the sides of the casing 6. lf this is done, the thumb-piece 17 may be used to retract the latch-bolt on one side of the door, and a key inserted in the keyhole nin the opposite side of the lock-case maybe employed for drawing the latch-bolt away from a hasp-plate, with which it may be engaged.
If preferred, a keyhole o maybe formed oppositely in the side walls of the casing adjacent to a guard 18, which is positioned below and near the horizontal limb of the L- shaped lever 7, so that the introduction of a suitable key into the keyhole o will permit of the upward rocking movement of the weighted limb of the L-shaped lever 7 and a retractionof thelatch-bolt lOin an obvious manner.
Referring again to the locking-bolt 8, it will be seen that the bit ofthe key 9 must be exactly'proportioned in length to suit the spaced interval vbetween the lugs ee' on the inner end of the locking-bolt, as in case said bit is not of sufiicient'length the rear end of the locking-bolt will not be raised up far enough to clear the bar h from l(he walls of the notch g it occupies when the nose of the locking-boltis projected from the lock-case, and the bolt cannot be retracted by a key that is not correct in form nor can the bolt be thrown to'lock it lt will be seen that if the L-shapedlever-7 is in normal adjustment, which adapts the gravity-block 7 to rest upon the projection c, this will not impede the operation oflocking or unlocking the bolt 8 unless the locking-dog 11 is adjusted to engage its nose with the shoulder -z on the latch-bolt 10. In this case the retention of the latch-bolt' 10 in projected adjustment will prevent the upward rocking movement of the gravity-block 7 on the lever 7, and as said block rests upon the locking-boltS while the latter is thrown to lock'it evidently both the latch-bolt and locking-bolt will'be held from retraction by the locked adjustment of the dog 11.
It will be evident from the foregoing description that a cheap, strong, andreliable latch and lock is aorded, which is very secure and that is available for use generally, being adapted for application to doors guard- -ing exits fromfa building or upon doors be- IDO IIO

From the peculiar construction of the device the latch-bolt 7 may be turned over so that the sloped face ot' its nosepiece 7a may be changed to face in an opposite direction and the lock be thus adapted for application to doors that swing in opposite directions,and the look is also well adapted for use on either right-hand or left-hand swinging doors.
Having thus described my invention, I 'claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Vl. In a lock, the combination withacasing, an L-shaped lever pivoted in the casing, a gravity-block on the lower horizontal limb of the L-shaped lever and a slidable latch-bolt pivoted by its inner end on the upper end of the upright limb of the L-shaped lever, of a knob-spindle rockable in the casing, a camshaped lever and retract the latch-bolt, an
, upright arm on the cam-hub, two horizontal tumbler-fingers notched to engage and lock the upright arm and thus prevent rocking of the knob-spindle, and means substantially as described for release of the tumbler-fingers from the upright arm.
2. In a lock, the combination with a casing an L-shapcd lever pivoted at its corner therein, having a gravity-block on its lower horizontal limb, and a slidablelatch-bolt pivoted at its inner end on the upper end of the L- shaped lever, oi a knob-spindle rockable in the casing, a cam-hub on said spindle'having a toe adapted to rock the L.shaped lever and retract the latch-bolt, an upright arm on the cam-hub, one or lnore horizontal tumbler-fingers pivoted by one end upon the casing, and notched on the lower edge, to engage the u pper end of said arm to lock the latch-bolt from retraction, and means such as a keyhole in the casing and a suitable key, whereby the tumbler-finger may be disengaged from the upright arm of the cam-bolt, and the latchbolt released.

The combination with a casing, a slid--A able latch-bolt therein, a rockable L-shaped lever weighted in its lower limb and pivoted by its upper limb upon the inner end of the latch-bolt, a rockable knob-spindle, a calnhub thereon having a toe pressing the upright limb of the L-shapcd lever, an arm on the cam-hub projecting upwardly, and two pivoted horizontal tumbler-fingers, notched in their lower edges to receive the upper end of the upright limb and thus preventrotation of the knob-spindle, of a tripping-arm held to rock in the casing below the tumbler-fingers, a thu mb-piece on the outer end of the shaft carrying the tripping-arm, which arm is adapted to lift the tumbler-fingers by one of its ends, and rock the upright arm of the cam-hub with its remaining member, so as to release the knob-spindle.
