SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551,639, dated December 17, 1895.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUSTAF F. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milan, in the county of Chippewa and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Bag- I-Iolder, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in bag-holders.

The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of bag-holders, and to provide a simple and inexpensive device adapted to bereadily applied to a bag and capable of supporting the same and maintaining the mouth thereof open without liability of tearing the upper end or mouth of the bag.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a bag-holder constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of one of the supportingplates. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view illustrating the manner of securing the supporting-hook to the curved bar.

Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.

l designates a curved resilient bar, constructed of suitable metal, and provided with a central supporting-hook 2, and adapted to be compressed and contracted, and inserted in that condition into the mouth of a bag or sack, and to expand and thereby frictionally engage the bag or sack to support the same with its top or mouth open. The curved bar is constructed of broad metal, as shown, and its ends are reduced to form projections 3 at the lower portion of the bar, and the upper edges of the projections 3 are rounded to avoid tearing a bag. The projections 3, which are integral with the bar, are curved outward, as shown, and the open space above the projections facilitates the disengagement of a bag.

The bag is supported at intervals between the ends of the curved bar l by substantially L-shaped plates 4, secured by rivets 4c to the exterior or outer face of the bar, and projecting horizontally therefrom. These L- shaped supporting-plates present broad horizontal portions to engage the bag, and there is no liability of the latter being torn or punctured by the supporting device. v

The supporting-hook is provided at the top with the U-shaped bend 5, which is adapted to engage a board or the like, and the hook is provided at the lower end of its shank with a depending L-shaped arm 6, secured to the inner face of the curved bar, and offsetting the same from the engaging bend of the hook to provide ample space to permit a bag to be placed on and removed from the support.

It will be seen that the bag-holder is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in its construction, that itis adapted to readily receive and engage a bag at the mouth thereof, and that there is no liability of tearing the same.

It will also be apparent that the supporting-hook is adapted to engage rigidly a board or other support, and that the curved bar is offset sufficiently from such a board to enablea bag to be readily placed on and removed from the bar.

Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction maj7 be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

What I claim is- .A bag holder, comprising a semi-circular resilient bar, designed to be placed in the mouth of a bag and having its terminals separated and located at diametrically opposite points and provided with laterally curved bag engaging projections 3, formed integral with the bar and located at the bottom thereof, the exteriorly arranged L.shaped supporting plates secured to the curved bar and projecting horizontally therefrom and affording broad rectangular supporting surfaces to avoid tearing or puncturing a bag, and the supporting-hook composed of the U-shaped upper portion and the Lshaped arm secured to the curved bar and offsetting the latter from a supporting board or the like, substantially as described.
