To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM LINCOLN BAR-.

BER, of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island,

have invented certain new and useful Im- 'provements in Trousers-Guards; and I hereby had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. I Bicycle-riding has come into such general use that it is now desirable to so construct released to fall all over the foot in the the garments of men and women that while worn afoot they shall conform to the correct form and fashion and can be readily adapted for use on the cycle.

The object of this invention is to provide ready means by which trousers can be see curely fastened around the ankle and held while the wearer uses thecycle and be readily approved fashion while walking.

The invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction of the device adapted to be secured to the upturned hem of the garment, as will be more. fully set forth hereinafter. t

The fastening device consists of two interlocking parts. The part 9 is a flat piece of (preferably) sheet metal, provided with the elongated hole 10, the tongue 11, and the two fastening-prongs 12. The other part of the device is the fiat piece of metal 13, provided also with the tongue 11 and the prongs 12,

like the part 9 at one end, and at the other end with the neck 14 and the preferably heartshaped head 15. Both the parts are preferably secured to the inner turned-over hem 8 by passing'the pointed prongs 12' through the cloth of the same, then again through the cloth, and then bending the pointed'ends of the prongs 12 over-the inside of the hem, as is shown in Figs. 2 and The tongues 11 bear on the inner surface of the hem and hold the devices closeagainst-the hem when not in use for fastening the two opposite parts together.

This isan essential feature, as it prevents in the ordinary use of the garment interference of the devices with the shoes and the least possible projection 'of the devices. The hole 10, the head 15, and neck 14 are proportioned so that to secure'one of the devices, to the other one mustbe turned with the edge ofthe garment to be at or nearlyat a right angle to the other to permit the insertion of-the head 15 lengthwiseinto the hole 10, and then to be returned to the original position to bring the head 15' under the plate 9, as is shown in Fig. 3.

The formfs of the head, neck, and the hole 10 may be varied; but it is essential that a quarter-turn, or nearly so, should be given to enter the head and lockthe same, so that no matter how complicated or violent the motion of the garment it cannot be unfastened until one part is turned partially to remove the head 15 from the hole orslot l0.

The device is a very useful one for trousers for ordinary wear, for in wet weather or on muddy streets the trousers can be quickly raised and fastened at the ankle. They are thereby much better protected from contact with the road and are not injured as they are when turned up in rainy weather.

For ladies skirts one part of the device can be secured in front-and the other in the rear Without interfering with the ordinary use of the skirt, and when desiri-ngtomount a cycle the front and rear of the skirt can be quickly secured together, so as to form the divided skirt so desirable in cycling.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 4 In a trousers-guard, the combination with the upturned hem 8, of the plate 9 having the longitudinal opening 10, the central tongue 11 lying on the surface of the hem, and the parallel prongs 12 extending through the hem near the points of their juncture with the plate 9, their-ends extending through the hem and beingbent inward toward the tongue 11, and the plate 13, having the neck 14, the 15 head 15, the tongue 11 and prongs 12, secured to the hem like the similar parts of the plate- 9, as and for the purpose set forth.
