Description

(No Model.)
P. R. HANSBURY.
GARMENT PROTECTOR.
Patented Sept. 3, 1889.
WITNESSES Phu o-Lilhcgmphw. Waslnnglon o c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER R. HANSBURY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HARRY S. HANSBURY, OF SAME PLACE.
GARMENT-PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,416, dated September 3, 1889.
Application filed June 10,1889. Serial No. 313,788. (No model.)
To all Ill/ 1,07 it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, PETER R. IIANSBURY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garment-Protectors, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and the accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of protectors for garments, more particuarly pantaloons or trousers, the same being applied to the bottom of the legs thereof, and constructed as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a piece of a garment-protector embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section thereof, on a reduced scale, in position 011 the pantaloons.
Similar letters of reference. indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a protector for the bottom edge of one of the legs of a pair of pantaloons or trousers, the same being properly sewed or otherwise secured to the inside thereof, and consisting of a piece of soft rubber or other elastic or flexible material of non-absorbent nature. Thelower edge of the piece is thickened, forming a bead B, and within the same is embedded a core 0, of suitable material such as a cord, reed, &c., whereby said edge is strengthened and its wearing qualities are increased, it being seen that the bottom edge of the leg of the pantaloons is removed from contact with the pavement or ground and set back from the heel of the shoe or boot, thus protecting said edge. As the protector is formed of nonabsorbent material, water on the pavement or ground is prevented from being conveyed to the edge of the pantaloons.
It is evident that the protector is applicable to the bottom edge of a ladys dress.
I am aware that it is old to secure to the lower end of a garment a piece of non-absorbent material, and also that it is not new to reenforce the lower edge of said protecting-piece by inclosing a cord within a hemmed or double portion thereof; but I am not aware that it is common to secure to the lower end of a garment a piece of non-absorbent material, as soft rubber, having a head or thickened portion on its lower edge with a cord solidly embedded therein, the cord serving to keep the said lower or beaded edge in shape, and as there is comparatively no joint water is prevented from entering the bead.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A garment-protector consisting of a piece of soft rubber, having at its bottom a bead solid with said piece, and a core in said bead, substantially as described.
PETER R. I'IANSBURY. \Vitnesses:
