The present invention relates to protectors for hosiery in general and more especially to an improved and novel light and very trans- 7 parent hosiery protector, more partlcularly those worn by womenand girls.

It is well known that in bad weather the heels of the shoes Will kick up the water or v slush on the back part of the hosiery, around the ankle and calf of the leg, causingthe hol siery to become wet and dirty, resulting in a great deal of inconvenience to the wearer. Also the dripping of water from coats (and especially from slickers is a source of 'a good deal of trouble to women in bad Weather, as well as the splashing of water and slush upon a persons hose by passing vehicles when attempting to pass too close to vehicles in going over a crossing. j

With these facts in view it is the main object of the present invention to provide a hosiery protector of the character described which will not only prevent the soiling of the hose, but will also be neat in a pearance and made of such a material whic will permit the same to be folded in a smalland compact package which may be easily carried in a ladys handbag or the like. 7 Another. object of the invention is to provide a protector of the "character described 39 which may be constructed of a transparent rubberized fabric, such as silk, or the like, and which is shaped to conform to and fit about the ankle and calf of the leg, said protector being provided with novel and improved means for preventing the same from slipping down when applied to the leg of a erson. Stated generally, the invention comprises a.

hosiery protector made in the form of a gaiter or legging and which is designed to be constructed o a very thin and very transparent rubberized fabric, such as silk, or the like.

The said protector is designed to fit snugly I around the ankle and calf portion of the leg, as well as around the heel and instep portions thereof for proving a maximum amount of-protection from splashing water or slush, and the like.

The said protector is also provided with suitable fastening means along the outer edges thereof for securing the same in place whenapplied to the leg of a person, as well as having a suitable strap provided on the inside thereof adapted to go around the cali portion of the leg for preventing the said protector from slipping sin the material therwf is very light in wei h A suitable arch strap of usual-and well nown construction is also provided on said protector, for further aiding in the application thereof to the leg. g a

Referring more specifically to the drawings, the reference character 10, des gnates the main body of the protector or legglng, the same being made of very thin and transparent water-proof fabric, such for example,

as silk or the like, and shaped to conform to the general contours of the calf and ankle. portions of the wearer, so as to comprise an instep covering portion 11, at the front thereof, a heel covering portion 12, at the back thereof an ankle embracing portion 13, adjacent the instep and heel covering portions, and a calf embracing portion 14, at the upper end thereof.

In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1, and 2, of the drawings, the legging or protector 10, is composed of three blanks, a main or central blank 15 and two lateral, or side -

16 and 17 The main blank is suitably curved along its sides to adapt it to snugly and neatly fit around the calf ortion of the wearer, and is widened at the ottom to form the toe or instep portion 11, at the front thereof, and the heel portion 12, at the back thereof. The

16, and 17 have respectively approximately straight outer edges 18, and 19, but at their inner edges have respectively curvatures 20, and 21, substantially precisely the same as those of the edges of the main blank 15. The respective blanks are attached together in any suitable and well known manner,'such as by stitching, or the like. All of the marginal edges of said legging or protector 10, may be turned in and stitched, as indicated at 22, and 23, in Fig. 2, to produce neat, even, and smooth marginal edges therefor. The protector conforms neatly to the shape of the leg well up over the calf, and in order to prevent the same from slipping down,

since the material is very thin, I provide an inner strap 30 which is also made of the same thin, transparent material. This strap 1s made of sufficient length to fit tightly around the calf, and is connected in any suitable manner intermediate the ends thereof to the body of the protector on the inner side thereof, as shown at 31 in Fig. 2. The strap 30, has its extremities provided with suitable fastening means such as the snap fastener 32, for connecting the ends of said strap together, when the same is applied to the leg of the wearer.

In the modified form illustrated in Fig. 3, the protectgr or legging 40, is similar in every respect to the embodiment illustrated in Flgs. 1, and 2, only that said protector 40, is constructed of two blanks, 41, and 42, instead of the three blanks employed in the first form. The resultant protector is fastened at the back as shown in Fig. 3. Otherwise, the construction of this modification is the same, and for that reason it is deemed unnecessary to further describe the construcprotector 50, of this modification is otherwiseconstructed similar to the form illustrated in Figs. 1, and 2, of the drawings. When the protector is appliedto the leg-of the wearer and secured in place thereon, it will extend over the instep and heel of the foot, as well as up around the ankle and calf, the same will so cover and enclose the parts as to efliciently protect the stocking from becoming wet or damp, and also from spatterin by muddy water, mud or the like, thus afl'or ing a very desirable protection from both standpoints of health as well as appearance. It will be understood that the novel protector may be made in desirable color effects, so that in and of itself it will provide an attractive feature of dress, especially for women.

The legging or protector is to be made of very light and very transparent material which will thus give the same appearance to the apparel when the same is worn by a person, as when the wearer may discard the rotector, in good weather. Also because 0' its lightness, the said protector may be folded into a small and compact package which ma be easily carried around in a womans han bag, or the like, thus making it available for use whenever found necessary or desirable. It is believed that my invention, its mode of construction, and many of its advantages should be readily understood from the foregoing without further description, and should also be manifest that while preferred as embodiments of the invention have been shown and described for illustrative purposes, the structural details are nevertheless capable of wide variation within the purview of my invention, as defined in the appended claim.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

A protector for hosiery constructed of a very thin and transparent water-proof material, which is adapted to snugly fit around the leg of a person for protecting the hosiery, the uppermost portion of said protector flaring upwardly and outwardly, whereby the said upper portion may be turned down to give the appearance of a pirate boot and a strap provided on the-inner side of the protector adjacent the upper edge thereof ada ted to surround the calf portion of the eg and to be securely fastened thereaboutsfor maintaining the said protector in an upstanding position, said protector being adapted to be folded into a small and compact package which may'readily fit into a ladys handbag; v a In testimony whereof I aflix my si ature.
