To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE WV. CLARK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bayonne, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neckties, of which the following is a specification.

In the use of necktiesof various kinds there ismuch waste, due to the fact that the com paratively small exposed portion of the tie is soon discolored or is worn by contact with the chin or by the repeated insertion of the scarfpin. These ties commonly consist of a narrow band adapted to be passed around the collar and formed in one piece with the band and another portion with which the knot is formed and which constitutes the exposed and ornamental portion of the tie. The part of this tie portion upon which the wear comes is that immediately contiguous to the band, leaving the other end of the tie portion in a perfectly new condition at a time when the necktie as a whole becomes useless and must be thrown away. The tie being also often of considerable vlength it must becut from large pieces of material. j

It is the object of my invention to double the period of usefulness of neckties by enabling different ends ofthe tie portion to be utilized, and I accomplish this by making the band and tie proper separate and readily detachable and by adapting either end of the tie portion to loe connected with the band and thus brought into such position that it may serve to vform the knot without impairing the transverse iiexibility and knotting capacity of the tie. j Such being the general nature of my invention, it consists in the parts and combinations thereof hereinafter set forth and claimed.

In order to make the invention more clearly understood, I have shown in the accompanying drawings means for carrying it into practical effect without limiting my improvements in their useful applications to the particular construction which for the sake of illustration I have delineated.

In said drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of a four-in-hand necktie embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the body or tie portion reversed. Fig.l 3 is a front view of a tie knotted to conceal the fastening clasp orhooks. Fig. is aviewshowing, onalarger scale, the fastening means.

Referring to the drawings, 2 and 3 are re- 55 ward their ends, and the ends of both parts being made of equal width, so as to be adapted 6o These partsn are lined and finished in the usual manner, the tie portion being iinished at both ends. The band portion 2 may also be finished at each end, so that both ends of it may be successively utilized in the middle portion of the necktie.

Various forms of fastening devices may be employed to connect the parts 2 and 3 of the necktie.

The parts of the clasp or other fastening means may be of brass, nickel-plated, or other material, and fixed on the parts of the necktie by impaling points or hooks 8.

I employ a plurality of separate fastening devices, as seen on a larger scale in Fig. 4, so as to give to the necktie a lateral flexibility.

When one end of the part 3 is worn, as shown at 9 in Fig. l, it may be unhooked from the band and turned end for end, Fig. 2, and reattached to the band, after which the tie will continue to present a new appearance, the worn portion- 9 being concealed in the vest of the wearer.

When the four-in-hand tie is knotted to conceal the joint, the fasteners being in a series and spaced apart will close up against or over each other, as seen in Fig. 3, thus giving to the tie transverse flexibility at the joint and enabling it to be knotted to conceal the joint and present a natural appearance.

I claim@ A four-in-hand necktie consisting of a band, a separate tie or body portion, and a series of fasteners joining the two parts end lto end whereby the parts of the tie may be reversed, the said fasteners being spaced apart, whereby the tie is transversely flexible at the joint, and may be knotted to conceal the joint, substantially as set forth.
