Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
GEORGE ALEXANDER HYN DS, OF LITTLE FALLS, NEW YORK.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,203, dated October 22, 1895.
Application iiled February 2, 1895. Serial Not 537,114. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, GEORGE ALEXANDER HYNDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Little Falls, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco- Pipes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part 'of this specitication.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tobacco-pipes, and especially to a section-stem pipe in which provision is made for producing circuitous channels through which the smoke is caused to pass in reaching the mouthpiece, by which means 'the smoke is caused to be cooled and freed of all deleterious substances which in a volatile state would otherwise allow the nicotine of the tobacco to be carried into the mouth of the smoker.
A further feature of the invention resides in causing the smoke to return through intersecting coils or channels after passing through an interior perforation into a receiving-chamber, from whence it passes through said channels and into the mouthpiece. h
To these'ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists, further, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
l clearly illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, forrh a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section through my improved pipe; Fig. 2, a perspective in detail of parts of the pipe; Fig. 3, a central longitudinal section through the mouthpiece.V Figl 4 is an enlarged detail view ot' the removable cylinder of the mouthpiece.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the bowl of a pipe, having the integral stem portion B, having a central perforation b, terminating at one end in a lug C. D is a cylindrical portion, having an interior longitudinal apertured, which isadapted to snugly t over the said lug C, and E is an elongated cap open at one end,"and` is designed to fit snugly over the said cylindrical portion D, which is provided with the intersecting spiral channels e e. A sufficient space G is allowed between the end of the cylinder D and the closed end of the cap E to form a smoke-chamber for the reception of the same before it passes'through the channels en route to the mouthpiece.
H is a ferrule, which connects the portion B to the stem portion K, which latter carries the cylinder L, which fits snugly up tothe recessed end Z, provided to receive any impurities in condensation. The inner end of this cylinder should have its edges bent in so as to allow the sediment to be readily withdrawn when the said cylinder is withdrawn to clean .the stem.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As anY improved article of manufacture a pipe having in combination with the centrally perforated portion C of the bowl, a hollow cylinder D designed to fit over the said portion C, and having intersecting spiral channels about its circumference, a cap E closed at one end, and designed to fit over the Asaid channeled cylinder, the ferrule H and mouthpiece, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature -in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE ALEXANDER HYNDS. Vlitn'esses:A
E. J .Y CoEFIN,
