Description

(No Model.)
L. AYMO MB LBVE No. 544,321. Patented Aug. 13, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS C. RAYMOND, OF RUTLAND, VERMON PLUMB-LEVEL.
SPECIFIQATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,321, dated August 13, 1895.
Application filed March 13 1 8 95 To, all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, LEWIS O. RAYMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rutland, in the county of Rutland, State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Levels, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in levels, and it has for its objects, among others, to provide asimple and cheap level, which shall be most accurate and in which the plumb may be adjusted,
when desired, and the operative parts readily repaired or replaced when necessary. Means are provided for steadying the plumb when desired.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in whic Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved level with the cover to the chambers removed. Fig. 2 shows such cover. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the body portion of the level, preferably of wood, having metal tips A at the ends, which may be as fanciful as may be desired. Near its center the body portion is formed with the chambers B and B, as seen in Fig. 1, in which the plumbs are located.
The plumb 0, located in the chamber B, is suspended by the cord 0, of any suitable material, one end being secured or connected to the plumb in any suitable manner, and the other end connected with the eye (1 of the screw rod-or bolt D, which is threaded in the arch portion of the metallic support D, a thumb-nut D being provided for the purpose of adjusting the said cord and the plumb. This support D has the flanges cl, which are mortised into the body portion of the level,
Serial No. 541,574. (No model.)
as seen in Fig.1, its base portion (1 being provided with an opening d for the passage of the cord, this opening being coincident with an opening (1 in the top of the body portion above the chamber, as seen best in Fig. 3. This support is arched for strength, and near its base it is formed with the bar E, which at its center is extended upward, as seen at E, and through the apex is an opening 6, through which works the cord 0, as seen best in Fig. 3. p
F is a lever extending through a slot in the body portion and through a coincident slot in the flange 01 of the support D, being pivoted between its ends, as at f, with one end extended beyond the support, as seen in Fig. 1, and the other end extending into the chamber B and formed upon a compound curve and extended beneath the plumb and adapted to be moved into contact therewith to regulate or steady the same, as will be readily understood.
In the chamber B is apiurnb G, the cord G of which extends lengthwise of the level, being held at its outer end in any suitable manner and passing through an opening in the apex of the angular portion h of the bar H, held in the opening H, which is tapered from opposite sides toward the center and may or may not be covered with a transparent cover.
A lever I is provided, pivoted at 2' and working in a slot in the body portion of the level and in the flange of the support D, as shown in Fig. 1, its inner end being curved and adapted to be thrown into contact with the plumb to regulate and steady the same.
A cover J is provided for the chambers B and B to protect the parts located therein, and this cover may be detachably held in p0- sitionin any suitable manner, being countersunk in the face of the body portion, so as to be flush therewith, as seen in Fig. 3, and there may be a cover on only one side or upon both sides, if occasion should ever require.
With the parts constructed and arranged substantially as above specified the operation is simple and will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, and a f urther detailed description thereof is not deemed necessary.
Modifications in details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
\Vhat is claimed as new is' 1. In a level, the combination of the body portion, a flanged arched support secured thereto and formed with an integral transverse bar parallel with the length of the body portion and having a central upward angular extension with a central opening, and a line secured to the under side of the arched support at the top and passed through the opening in said angular extension and carrying a plumb, substantially as described.
2. In a level, the combination of a body portion with a chamber, a flanged arched support having its'flanges seated in recesses in a thumb screw on the end of the rod above.
the arch of the support, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS RAYMOND. Witnesses:
