Description

J LUTZ SASH PASTBN ER.
Patented Aug. 6, 1895.
UNITED STATES.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN LUTZ, OF ALBUQUERQUE,- TERRITORY OF NEW MEXICO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE NEHER, or SAME PLACE.
SASH-FAST'ENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 543,880, dated August 6,1895. Application filed May 27, 1895. Serial No. 550,742. (No model.)
T 00% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN LUTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albuquerque, in the county of Bernalillo and Territory of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in sash-fasteners, and
especially to the class of rack-and-pinion locks in which two segment beveled pinions are caused to engage with asimilarly-inclined 2c rack-bar secured to the window-frame, the two segment-pinions being pivoted together at their rear ends and mounted on the upper bifurcated arms of a spring-actuated post, which allows the forward serrated ends of the 2 5 segment-pinions to mesh with the teeth of the rack-bars.
A further object of the invention resides in the pivoting of a releasing-lever to a pin carried by the casing containing the said pinion-segments, which lever is pivoted near its longitudinal center to the pivot carrying the segments, and having its end extended without one side of the casing, and by which the segments may be disengaged from the rack- 33 bar when the said lever is allowed to be depressed under pressure.
A still further object of the invention resides in the provision of a pivoted rack-bar pivoted within the casing, the teeth of said 0 bar being designed to engage with an integral lug on the depressing-lever when the post or rack-bar is turned on its pivotal ends, thus securely locking the device until the rackteeth shall have been released from the said 5 engaging-lug, when the depressing and releasing lever is permitted to be operated.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists further in the novel construction, combination,
and adaptation of the parts, as will be herein after more fully described, and then specifi cally defined in the appended claims.
I clearly illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings similar letters. of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is aperspective viewof the fastener as secured to a window. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the segment-pinions, which are beveled, the same being shown in their relative operating positions. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the locking device. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a 6 detail view.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the window-frame, to the inner wall of which is sooured the inclinedrackbar B.
O is a casing which, when the sash-locking device is placed therein, is secured to the side of the sash D.
E is a post playing through an aperture F in the casing, and G a coiled spring bearing 7 between the inner wall of the casing about said aperture and the shoulders near the upper end of said post, Where its end is bifurcated, the two arms thereof being perforated and carrying in said perforations a pivot H, on which is journaled the lever 1, near its longitudinal center,'the said lever having an end extending without the casing where it is widened to form a push-lever.
J J are two segment-pinions having the 8 5 beveled serrated faces j j, and the rear ends of said pinions are pivoted to the pin H. The inner end of the lever I is pivoted at M. to an integral portion of the casing, and N is a lug along one face of the said lever. Vertically 9o pivoted within the said casing is therod or rack-bar 0, having the teeth P, which, when turned so that theteeth P will engage with the said lug N, will lock the lever from being depressed. Q is a spring for holding the said rack-post normally in a locked relation. R is an integral lug carried by said rack-post, and has an aperture 1- therein. S is a hook engaging in said aperture, and held therein by means of the lever T, pivoted on the pin U, I00
the outer free end of the said hook being directly in front of the'curved portion of the lever T, so that when the said lever T is crowded against the outer end of said hooked member the rack-post is caused to turn on its pivots and its teeth caused to be released from the integral lug N, allowing the lever I to be depressed and with it the two segment-pinions released from engagement with the beveled rack-bar secured to the window-casing.
It will be observed that recesses U and V are formed in the inner walls of the casing, which form a guide for the post and a seat for the spring bearing against the pivoted rack-post.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a sash fastener, the combination of the beveled rack bar secured to the window easing, the beveled segment pinions pivoted within a casing held to the window sash, and means for withdrawing the said segment pinionsfroin engagement with the said rack bar, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a sash fastener, the combination with the beveled rack bar, the two segment pinions beveled and pivoted near their rear ends to the end of a spring actuated post, and a lever for depressing said post, substantially as shown and described.
In a sash fastener, the combination of the beveled rack bar, the segment pinions beveled and pivoted to the bifurcated end of a spring actuated post held within a suitable casing, a lever I having one end pivoted to a portion of the said casing, fulcrumed on the pivot carrying. the segment arms, and its free end extended Without the casing, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a sash fastener the combination of the rack beveled as described, the segment pinions pivoted to the upper bifurcated end of a post which is spring actuated, the lever I, the lug N thereon, and the rack post 0, designed to engage with its teeth the said lug, and means for turning said rack post, substantially as shown and described.
5. In combination in a sash fastener, the segment pinions pivoted as described, the rack secured to the window frame, the lever I pivoted at one end to a pin carried by the casing, fulcrumed on the post between the ends of the segment pinions, the lug N on the said lever I, the vertically pivoted rack post, the integral lug carried thereby, the hook engaging in an aperture in said lug, the spring bearing against said rack, and a pivoted lever designed to press against said hook to cause the said rack post to be disengaged from the lug N, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I alIiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J OIIN LUTZ.
