G. H. MESSIGK.
SASH FASTBNER.
APP LIOATIQN uns FBB.1B, 19o7.
CORNELIUS H. MESSIOK, OF MESIO, NORTII CAROLINA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 7', 1908.
Application filed February 18.1907. Serizrl N0. 358,138.
T0 all 107mm it mag concem:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS II. Mus- SICK, a citizen of the United States residing at Mesio, in the county ol Pamlico, State of North Carolina, have invented certain new end useful Improvements in Sash-Fas*teners; end I do hereby deolare the following to be a full, clear, end exaot deseription of the invention, such as Will enalole others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the sarne.
'Ihis invention has relation to that dass of window fasteners that oombine a lock to fasten the window down With a holder that maintains the sash in any position to whioh it 1nay be raised.
It is the object of the invention to provide rneans for the purposes indioated that shall be extre1nely simple in their oonstruction end mocle of operation, as well as being entirely efficient in use.
The nature of the invention is clearly ascertainable fro1n the device portrayed in the annexed drawings, for1ning a part of this speoifioation, in view o'f whioh it will first be described with respect to its construotion und mocle 01 operation, and then be particularly pointed out in the subjoined olai1n.
Of the said drmvingsFigure 1 is a vertioal longitudinal sectional view of the inven' tion applied showing the lower sash es looked in clo'sed position. Fig. 2 is a view on an enlargecl scale of the upper portion of the parts represented, and showing the dog es in position to hold the lower sash partially raised. Fig. 3 is an inside view of the parts represented in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective -view o1 the dog separated fro1n other parts.
Si1nilar nurnemls of reference designate sin1ilar parts or features, as the ease may be, wherever they occur.
In thedrawings 10 designate the style ol a window sash, and 11 the inside stop of the window fra1ne 2. All of the foregoing parts may be of ehe form shown or ol any other suited ;lor the purpose.
13 is the roch-bar or stick conslsting of a bar of metal for1ned with a Hat rear side end a rouncled front sicle 01 notehes l'or a purpose to be presently explained. The cut-up parts 15, made by the forn1ation ol' the notohes 14, extend above the plane of the outer lace ol the bar.
16 is a dog or pawl for1ned With a thiok end Weightecl holding end 17 beveled at its outer end 18 just sufficiently to enable it to catch in the notches 14. The said'holding-end 17 is ofl'set, es et 19, at its inner end where it is united with a n1id portion 20 having parallel sides, which portion is provided with a transverse hole, 21, lor tho reception 0f the shank ol a fastening screw, 22, the outer nmrgin of seid hole being countersunk to receive the head of the seid screw. Below the mid portion, 20, of the dog is the looking end 23 whioh is beveled from its top to its bottoxn o1 outer end so as to lightcn its Weight, und its outer side is inolined fro1n the niid portion to its sharpened end, as shown.
'lho lower end of the rack-bar 13 may be beveled as shown und a countersunk screwhole 24 is l'ormod therethrough, end a like serewhole is formed through the upper end of the bar, which end is constructed to have the lock-end, 23, of the (log engage therewith.
In use the bar 13 may be secured t0 Ehe face 0f the stile in proper position by turning a screw, 25, through euch sorew-hole 24 in the ends, and the (log 16 will have the upper edge 18 of its holding end engaged with the upper notch 14 of the bar when the sash is down, and uhe sorew 22 will be turned through the hole 21 into the stop 11, but not so tightly es to bind it on the stop, but allowing it to work loosely 011 the shank of the screw as a pivot. Vith the parts in this position when the window is raised the. edge 18 of the holding end 17 will snap over oho notchos 14 until the winclow is stopped when by lowering the win doW in the slightest degree the seid edge of the holding end Will catch into ehe next notoh 14 below it end the window Will be hold in raised position. 'lhis action will take place et any point along the notched portion of the bar, it being understood that the holding end of the dog is overweighted so as to keep its edge in contact therewith. I/Vhen the window is fully closed, und it is desired to look it in that position, the holding end ol the dog will be disengaged fron1 the notohes in the bar und the dog will be tu1'ned 011 its pivot so as to engage the lockend 23 with the upper end o1 the bar 13 and thus lock the winclow down, and making it impossible without breaking; to open it from the outsicle. VVhen the (log is reversed to bring the look-end into use, the overweighted holding end Will act by its gravitating tendency to maintain the locking end of the (log in engagement with the upper end of the bar, as just clescribed.
By notching the side of the dog and making a hole laterally through its mid portion, a devioe of the ch2iracter mentionecl is produced that may with the utmost ease and readiness be seoureol exactly in the posioi0n desired, oho attaching means affords a perfect pivot for the clog to turn upon 130 per' form all of the functions ascribed to it. Furthermore, by orfsetting oho dog ab oho point 19, so as to reduce its width in order that the extent of the bearing for oho pivot 22 may be made quite short, allowing the dog to play freely on the pivot anal not become bound thereon, a thing that is essential 130 the 0ertainty of the operation olf' the clog. By over weighting the upper encl of the (log it is rendered capable of operation by gravity doing awe my Wih the necessity of employing sprmgs.
What is claimed is The combination, with a rackbar for attaohment so the side of a window-sash, of a dog having a weighted holding end adapted to ooperate with the nothes in the rackbar to hold the sash in raised o1 paroially raised position, and a lightel and sharper looking end anol a mid portion recluced 011 one side to narrow its width, said reduced mid portiofl .in presence of two witnesses.
