WILLIAM C. GUILF ORD, OF OHICOPEE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE NIGHTINGALE, OF I-IOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS.
CLOTHES-SUPPORTING ATTACHMENT FOR B-EDSTEADS.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 543,576, dated July 30, 1895. Application filed December 21, 1894- Serial No. 532,537. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. GUILFORD, a citizen of the United States,residing at Chicopee, in the county of Hampden and State of in g apparel, or on which especially where the attachmentis applied to the bed, the bedclothing may in part be supported, whereby it may receive thorough airing previous to making up thebed.
The invention consists in the combination of parts, all substantially as will hereinafter fully appear, and be set forth in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved device as applied on the foot-board of a bedstead. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing slight modifications in construction.
The device consists in parts in combination, as follows: The swing-frame A, composed-of the intermediate cross-rod 10 and side members 12 12, each of which comprises a terminal 13, which has, in substance, a hinge-like connection (as constituted by the spring-coil 14, the tendency of which is to swing the frame toward the face of the foot-board) with the main portion of the frame; socket b, to be secured to the foot-board, in which the said terminals may have. sliding engagements; one or more rods (1 each by an eye 16-at its end having a connection with the interme* diate member 10 of the said frame; an abutment-piece f, which may be secured on the footboard to form a resistant or a support for the lower end of each rod d, without preventing such rod from having swinging movements; and set-screws 20 for temporarily confining the terminal memhers of the frame in the aforesaid sockets.
By adjusting the frame vertically in its sockets, whereby an imaginary line between the coils is farther or nearer from the abutment-points ff, so proportionately greater or less will be the outswing of the frame when the rods are set on their end-supporting abutments.
The end abutments for the rods d are in Fig. 2 indicated as comprised in the bases of upwardly-opening pockets. rods 01 are jointed to form a Y, the middle member of which has its end support in any one of the vertically-arranged sockets in the plate or block which is attached on the footboard.
By changing the point of support of the stay-rod d the degree of distension of the frame A may be varied.
The pin or hook 25 is provided on a central overhanging part of the foot-board along the line of rest of the intermediate member 10 of the frame. By springing said member 10 downwardly at its central portion it may, when the device is not to be utilized, be caught under the said pins and held closely against the face of the foot-board.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with the swing-frame composed of the intermediate cross-rod, and side members each of which comprises a terminal which has the coils that constitute hinge-like connections with the main portion of the frame, and sockets in which the said terminals may have adjustable movements, of a rod, having a connection with the interme -diate member of the frame, an abutment to support the lower end of said rod, and set In Fig. 2 the screws for confining each of said terminals nals may have adjustable movements, of a rod, having a connection With the intermediate member of the frame, and several vertically arranged abutments any one of which maybe utilized to support the lower end of said rod, and set screws for confining each of said terminals in its duly adjusted position substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with the swing-frame composed of the intermediate cross-rod and the side members, 12,12, each of which comprises a terminal which has the coil, 1 1, that constitutes a spring hinge-like connection between the terminal and the main part of the frame, and means for supporting and confining said terminals, of a rod, having a connection with the intermediate member of the frame and an abutment against which may be placed the lower end of said rod, substan' tially as described and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination with the swing-frame composed of intermediate cross-rod, 10, and
shown. 7
