SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 543,398, dated July 23, 1895.

Be it known that we, AURELIUS E. NEW- MAN and LE ROY JAMES, of Ospur, in the county of De Witt and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description-of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in fence-posts.

The object of the invention is to provide an improved fence-post, exceedingly simple, strong, durable, and economical in construction, and so formed as to be easily planted and capable of supporting wire or rails.

A further Object of the invention is to provide certain improvements in the construc-` tion and arrangements of parts in fence-posts,

whereby a highly-improved eflicient post is provided. v

AThe invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in combination of parts more fully and particularly described hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of the post and its base. Fig. 2'is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is alongitudinal central section through the post and base, showing the peculiar wirefastening devices.4 Fig. 4 is a cross-section through the post and .its brace on line 4 4, Fig. 3.

In the drawings, ct is the base composed of the hollow pipe or cylinder, having its lower end crimped or turned inwardly, so as to reduce size of bottom opening, say, one-half of the diameter of the base, so as to retain the earth in the base and yet permit a ready outlet for the Water collecting therein.

The post b, formed of suitable metal, U- shaped in cross-section, extends vertically from the base and a suitable distance into the same. The portion of the post within the base is suitably riveted or otherwise secured therein, and at the upper end of the base the post is provided with offset or with inward bende, from which the upper portion of the post'extends straight and vertically, so that the weight of the post and strain is thrown toward the center of the base, and the post will thereby be straighter and more rigid when properly planted.

d is the brace, at its lower end extending into the base on the opposite side from the post and rigidly fastened to the base. This brace is U -shaped in cross-section and of such diameter as to iit within the rear depressed side of the post and extend to the upper end thereof, this brace'being longitudinally secured and fitted in the post and leaving the lower'4 portion thereof at a suitable angle to extend across to the opposite side of the base.

A most rigid and yet economical and simple construction is thus provided.

The post can be provided with any suitable l number of opposite lateral ears f from its flat side, perforated as shown, so that rails or fence-panels can be laid thereon and bolted thereto.

while the corrugations in the groove rigidly hold the wire against longitudinal slipping.

In planting these posts it is only necessary.

to bore a hole in the ground of such size that the cylindrical piece will iit'snugly therein and thus be held by the rigid compact formation of the groove. The loose earth can be packed into the interior ot' the hollow base, so that the most rm and rigid base for the post is secured with a minimum amount of digging and packing of earth.

It is evident that v various changes might be made in the forms, arrangements, and constructions of the parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention. Hence we do not wish to limit ourselves to the exact construction hereon set forth, but

Having thus fully described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-u 1. The fence post comprising the hollow base having its lower end turned or crimped inwardly to partially close its lower end, the post extending into the upper end of the base and secured therein and provided with the inwardly deflected offset at the upper end of the base, the post being approximately U- shaped in cross section and the brace secured to the base and to the post, substantially as described.

The hollow base, the post at its lower end secured in the open end of the base and having the inward offset at the upper open end of the base, the post approximately U-shaped in cross section and the brace secured in the open end of the base, and extending upwardly in the eoncaved side of the post approximately to the top thereof and approximately U-shaped in cross section and secured to the post, substantially as described.
