UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SILAS J. SAXON AND WILLIAM H. JAMES, OF OOLFAX, TVASHINGTON.
- FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,633, dated March 18, 1890.
Application filed July 15, 1889 Serial No. 317,529. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, SILAs J. SAXON and WILLIAM H. JAMES, both of Colfax, in the county of Whitman and Territory of Washington, have invented a new and Improved Fence-Post, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of our improved fence-post. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line 00 x in Fig. 2. section taken on line y yin Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken on line 2 z in Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of our invention is to provide a fence-post formed partly of iron and partly of wood, and constructed so that no water can settle in any portion of the post, so as to freeze or cause the decay of the wood or the corrosion of the iron. 4
Ourinvention consists in an iron foot-piece 7 Fig. 4 is a horizontal,
around a tube 0, which projects above the upper end of the foot-piece, so as to receive the wooden portion D. Into the lower end of the wooden portion D is driven a ferrule or ring E, and the wooden partD is driven onto the tubular extension 0, the ferrule or ring and the tubular extension being concentric. The ferrule E is designed to prevent the post from splitting and for compressing the Wood, so as to prevent the absorption of moisture.
The foot-pieceA is set in the ground in the same manner as an ordinary post, with its upper end even with the .top of the ground or a short distance above the ground-level. The wooden part D of the post is driven down upon the tube (J.
It is obvious that the tube 0 maybe formed integrally with the foot-piece A. Therefore we do not confine ourselves to the exact construction herein described.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An improved fence-post, consisting of a metallic foot-piece A, provided with the hub B, having the tubular extension 0 firmly secured thereto and projecting from its upper end, and the wooden upper portion D, driven onto the tubular extension, the post being firmly and permanently secured to the foot, substantially as herein shown and described.
SILAS J. SAXON. WVILLIAM H. JAMES. Witnesses:
J. W. HIGGINS, W. B. RENSHAW.
