SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 543,289, dated July 23, 1895.

To all whom/it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PERRY BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw- Handles, of which thefollowing is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to that class of sawhandles designed to receive the blades of cross-cut saws; and it consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described, and then definitely claimed at the end hereof.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical central section. Figs. 2 and 3 are details in perspective and vertical section, respectively, of a collar. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of a washer. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on the line w 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a bottom view of the lower extremity of the fastening device. Fig. 7 is a detail in vertical central section of the lower end of the same.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by figures, 1 represents the handle proper, preferably made of a hollow malleableiron casting, so as to'form a receptacle for the file or files used in sharpening the saw. The lower end of this handle is threaded inwardly. Above and around this flange is a collar 3, (shown in detail in Figs. 2 and 3,)
having lips 4, (preferably three in number,) which are bent under a washer 5 set underneath the flange 2, andthus hold said washer in place. This washer has notches 6 at opposite sides to receive the back of the saw and other notches 6' to receive the lips 4 of the collar 3, so that both the collar and washer will move together on the flange 2.
Screwed into the handle is the slotted fastener 7, preferably formed of two side pieces 8 and 9 and an end ferrule or ring 10. The upper part is formed, as shown in Fig. 4, with ridges 11 on one side 8 fitting within the edges of the other side 9. On the side 9 is cast a lug or rivet 12, the end of which is passed through a hole in the side 8 and riveted so as to securely hold the two sides to gether at that end. The lower end is secured together by the ferrule or ring 10, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7.
The lower end of the side 8 extends entirely across the slot formed by the junction of the two sides, as shown at 13, so there will be no tendency to force the sides apart, as there might be in case of bad fitting of the lower ends of the side pieces. 7
To secure a saw in this handle all that is necessary is to set the end of the saw into the slot 15 formed between the sides 8 9, with the back of the saw in the notches 6, and then turn the handle proper so as to draw the fastener 7 into-said handle until the saw is held tightly.
In some cases I may use instead of the hollow handle a wooden one, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, in which case the thread and flange now at the bottom of the handle would be on a ferrule fitting said wooden handle.
By the construction above described a very strong and convenient, yet cheap, handle is produced that is not only useful as a'liandle, but'also as a receptacle to contain the files used for sharpening the saw on which it is used.
What I claim as new is 1. The combination with a handle having an internal thread, of a two part fastener 7, one part having ridges 11 fitting within the other part and the two united at bottom by a'ring and threaded at top to enter the handle, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a saw handle having an internal thread, a fastener 7 comprising twoside pieces 8, 9, one piece having ridges 11 fitting within the other piece and the two externally threaded and secured together by a rivet at one end and a ring at the other, substantially as described. 7
