Description

G. E. MILLER..
SAW HANDLE FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED AUGAS. wis,

WITH/5555 J1/Saxe ggd-@XM UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE.
GEORGE E. IVIIILLE'R, ory sTEGE, CALIFORNIA.
i SAW-HANDLE FAS'IENER.
To all fwwmc may concern."
Be it known that I, GEORGEE. MILLER, citizen of the United States, residing at Stege, county of Contra Costa, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Handle Fasteners, whereof the following is a specification.`
This invention relates to means for fastening the handles and blades of saws together.
In carrying out the invention I aim to provide a more simple fastening than has heretofore been used and one so constructed as to simplify the act of connecting and loosening the blade and handle; also to re duce the number of fastenings. p
To these ends I make use of a single transverse bolt or pin which engages a notch in the saw blade, and, toward the other side of the blade I make use of a longitudinal bolt or pin which is slotted to receive the blade and provided with means for engaging the blade and with means for drawing it tight.
In the accompanying 1 sheet of drawings I have illustrated my invention as applied to a carpenters hand saw.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation showing the handle and a portion of a saw blade, the handle being partially cut away and sectioned to more perfectly show one of the fastening means.
Fig. 2 isa transverse section on the line ai, a, of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Fig. 3 is a section of the longitudinal fastening bolt showing also in sectiDn the saw blade therein.
Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line Z), Z), of Fig. 3.
In the figures: 1 represents a saw handle which may be of the ordinary form, and 2 is the saw blade. 3 is a notch in the upper edge of the saw blade shown in Fig. 2 and dotted lines in Fig. 1. 4 is a bolt passing transversely through the handle, 1, and in a position to engage the notch, 3. 5 is a Longitudinal fastening bolt provided with a nut, 6. This bolt passes through a hole, 7 in the handle, 1. The nut, 6, rests in a notch, 8, cut in the hand hole, 9, of the handle for that purpose, so that the nut, 6, and the end of the bolt, 5, will be out of the way of the fingers in grasping the handle.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented May 1s, `191,9.
"Thebolt, 5, is provided rwith a longitudinal slot or kerf, 10, shown more particularly in Fig. 3. This slot is of a width to receive the saw blade, 2. 11 is a hole through the saw blade at any convenient point of that part which enters the slot, 10. 12 is a latch which engages the hole, 11, and is pressed into it by the spring, 13, which may be fastened by a screw, as 14.
In connecting the handle to the blade, the bolt, 5, is entered in the hole, 7, and the blade is then inserted in the usual kerf in the handle provided to receive it kand its notch, 3, engages with the bolt, 4, the blade is then swung upon the bolt, 4, as a pivot until its edge enters the kerf, l0, in bolt, 5, and the latch, 12, engages the hole, 11, in the blade. The bolt 5, is then pushed on through the hole, 7, and the nut, 6, applied to it and tightened, drawing the blade firmly to its seat in the handle.
To disengage the blade and handle, the nut, 6, is first loosened or removed and the bolt, 5, then pushed longitudinally until the latch, 12, disengages the hole, 11, in the blade, 2. The blade may then be removed from the handle by simply reversing the movements by which it was applied. When the blade is drawn tightly to its seat and the spring, 13, will be within the hole, 7, in the handle and this will act as a lock to the latch, 12, and effectually prevent accidental disengagement.
. Having thus described my invention, and an embodiment of it, in the full, clear and exact terms required by law, and knowing that it comprises novel, useful and valuable improvements in the art to which it pertains, I here state that I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction and arrangement of the several parts, as herein set forth, as the same may be variously modified by a skilled mechanic without departing from the spirit of the invention.
l/Vhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is the following, to wit 1. A saw handle fastening device, com-I on said bolt` engaging automatically said hole and holding said blade Within said slot. 2. A savv handle fastening, comprising,
in combination with a blade and handle, a
5 slot in the back edge of the blade, a fastening bolt adapted to engage said slot, a longitudinal bolt near the toothed edge of the blade, said bolt being slotted to receive the blade, said blade having a hole through it,
and a latch applied to the bolt and adapted 10 to engage Said hole.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereto set my hand in the presence of tWo Witnesses, this 10th day of August, 1915.
I GEORGE E. MILLER. v Witnesses:
