SAW-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part/Of Letters Patent No. 752,364, (lated February 16, 1904.
l i Application {iied .Tune 2, 1903. Serial No. 159,726. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID W. SOLOMON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Arlington, in the county of Snohomish and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw Handles, of which the following is a speciiioation, reference being had therein to theaccompanying drawings.
This invention relates particularly to handles for crosscut-saws.
'The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of handle for securely holding a saw-blade which will be simple, strong, and easy of adjustment and whereby greater ease is secured to the operator and his hands are guarded from being accidentally lacerated by coming in contact with the teeth of the saw.
The accompanying drawings, forming part l a socket for the reception of a handle-stick and is integrally connected by a shank c toa plate d, which is bifurcated, as plainly shown in Fig. 2, to provide a slot e to receive the end of a saw-blade S. The plate d is extended downwardly to provide a hand-guard d.
The handle is aflixed to the saw-blade by means of clamp-screws f and f ,having, preferably, rectangulary-shaped middle portions W, that are passed transversely through apertures g and g', respectively, of the plate. The said apertures are made, preferably, of similarlyshaped sides, so as to prevent their being rotated as the wing-nuts 7c thereof are screwed down upon the threaded ends of the bolts in erator, the handle would be placed upon the saw-blade, as shown in Fig. l, with the guard extension d projecting beneath a line extended along the points of the saw-teeth and which prevents the operators hand being cut should it be thrust forward independently of the saw when for any reason the blade gets stopped within the saw-kerf.
Where the saw is used by two men-as, for example, in felling treesthen the handle may advantageously be reversed-that is to say, the guard extension would be toward the back of the saw, where it may be used as a supplemental hold for one of the hands of the operator in guiding the saw and also to form a fulcrum, whereby the sag of the saw in horizontal cuts may be obviated by pressing down with one hand upon the stick-handle and bearing up with the other upon the guard.
`It is obvious that this handle while being retained in the same plane as the blade may be inclined to any angle relatively of the axis of the blade, as the handle-clamping bolts are not engaged in any holes of the blade, and in this particular, as well as to other advantages above referred to, the invention marks a deeided advance in the art. y
Modification may be made without departure-from .the principle or sacrificing the advantages of theinvention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
tively positioned so as to accommodate sawblades of Varying widths therebetween and iahn said clamping-bolts, substantially as speci- 2. In a saw-handle, the combination with a stick-socket a, shank c, plate d having a slot e and apertures g and g and provided with a hand-guard d in combination with clamp-bolts j and f and the nuts 7s, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I aiX my signature in presence of two witnesses. A
DAVID W. SOLOMON.
