Description
w. CLEMSON.
Handles for'Saws.
Patented Feb. 11,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM CLEMSON, OF MIDDLETOWN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT N HANDLES FOR SAWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,628, dated February 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
BE it known that I, WILLIAM OLEMsoN, of Middletown, in the county of Orange, in the State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Handles for Saws, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to attach an adjustable handle to a hand-saw that is used either as a cross-cut for sawing logs or wood by one man or for ripping lumber; and it consists in the construction of the saw-blade and the handle that is adjusted to be at different angles upon the saw.
In the drawing, figure l is a side view of saw-blade and adjustable handle; Fig. 2 is a side view of the saw-blade; and Fig. 3 is an edge view of the handle.
A represents the blade of the saw, having teeth on one edge, and near its rear end has a hole, a, in the center of the circle at the end of the saw and two curved slots, a a, concentric with the center hole a or, a series of holes may be used instead of the slots as seen in the dot-ted linesin Fig. 2. B is the center part of the handle, the circle of which correspondsin size to the circle on the rear end of the saw, having a center hole, a, to receive the pivotscrew b, and two other circular holes,
a a, to receive the ho1ding-screws b I), while B B are the handles that the operator takes hold of to operate the saw. The center part B has a transverse slot, 0, to receive the rear end of the saw when the pivot-screw b is put into the center hole of the handle and goes through hole a in the center of the rear end of the saw-blade and into the wood of the handle on the other side of the transverse slot and saw-blade, turning into the wood so as to hold the handle fast to the saw-blade; or, the handle may be made as seen in Fig. 2, in dotted lines. Screws 1) I) are put into the handle in the same manner as the pivot or center screw b, and go through the curved slots or holes a a in the saw-blade, and thence into the other part of the handle, when, by turning them up hard, they will clamp the handle and hold it firmly and at any desired an gle on the saw-blade.
In using this saw only one man is required to operate it, and when used as a wood-saw, commonly known as a buck-saw, or for purposes of ripping lumber, the handle may be placed as seen in Fig. 1 in dotted lines, and when used for cross-cutting the handles will be as seen in full lines in said figure, or may be adjusted at any desired angle to suit the operator.
In sawing wood as with a buck-saw, much of the weight of the ordinary saw-frame is dispensed with hence less force is required to operate it, and a better result is obtained.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The handle B 13, having screws b b b, in combination with the saw-blade A having the pivot-hole a and adjusting concentric slots or-series of holes a a, all constructed and arranged to operate in the manner described.
