EDWIN ,HENRY I-IUTOHINSON, OF J AMESTOWN, ARKANSAS.
SAW.
.srnerrrcA'rron forming part of Letters Patent no. 605,577, dated June 14, 1898.
A li ti h fil d November 20, 1897. Serialll'o. 659,320. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: v .Be itv known that I, EDWIN HENRY HU'rcH- INSON, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Independence and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Saw, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to saws,
and particularly to handles therefor.
The object of the invention is to provide a detachable auxiliary handle for crosscut-saws,
whereby the latter may be more easily and eff ectively operated.
With the above obj ectin view the invention 7 consists of a slotted plate adapted to straddle the back of the saw and provided with setscrews, by means of which it is detachably secured in position upon the saw, and a wooden handle carriedby the plate.
The invention also consists in certain novel features of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter fully described and afterward specifically pointed plied thereto. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the handle detached from the saw. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on'line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an elevation of a portionof the plate with the handle portion removed therefrom. Fig. 5 is avert-ical transverse sectional view of a slightly-modified form of my inven-' tion.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A indicates a metal plate provided with the vertical slot B, extending upwardly from its lower edge, thus forming legs which are adapted to straddle the saw. I
Set-screws G are providedfor detachably securing the plate upon the saw, said screws extendin inwardly through one of the legs of the plate and adjacent each end thereof.
Formed upon the upper edge of the plate and ears or lugs D, which are perforated in line with each other to receive the'pin E, which extends therethrough and securesthe' wooden handle portion F in position between said lugs. This handle portion is either provided with a groove upon its lower surface to receive the upper edge of the plate to prevent the turning of the handle portion, as illustrated in Fig. 3, or is made fiat on its under surface for the same purpose, as shown in Fig. 5.
In cutting down trees a common crosscutsaw isgenerally employed, two men operating the same, each man holding one of the handles thereof with one hand and with the other hand engaging the back of the saw for the purpose of holding the latter in a horizontal position and the teeth thereof in engagement with the tree. The more firmly the teeth, are held in engagement with the tree the better the saw cuts and the cutting operation is greatly facilitated. The back edge of the saw does not present a very good surface for the hand of the operator to engage, and by the use of my handle, which may be readily attached to thesaw, the latter can be much more conveniently operated "and the operator enabled to press the teeth thereof more firmly in contact with the tree.
-Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
An adjustable handle for saws consisting of a clam pin g plate slotted to straddle the sawblade and formed on its upper edge at its respective ends with ears, a cylindrical handle mounted between said ears through the medium of a pinpassing'therethrough, and clamping-screws carried by the plate, substantially asset forth."
