SAW-HANDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1%, 1%18.
Application filed February 1, 1917. Serial No. 145,929.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, THOMAS E. HoLMns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of Tallahatchie and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw- Handles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in saw handles and more particularly to a saw handle adapted to be applied to a cross cut saw, and which is capable of being adjustable for either cut-ting logs on the ground or for cutting down trees,
A further object of the invention is to provide a saw handle of t -ls character which is adapted to be readily attached or detached from a saw.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very eflicient in operation.
With these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be herein referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the handle;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. d is a front elevation of the front washer;
Fig. 5 is a side view of the handle.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The device comprises a handle 1 which is formed of wood, or any other desired material, and which is provided adjacent its lower end with a longitudinally extending flat-sided slot 9 therein. Positioned on the lower end of the handle 1 is a sleeve 3 which is provided with alining longitudinally extending openings therein which are adapted to be positioned adjacent the opposite ends of the slot through the handle, and which aline with, the same. This sleeve 3 is secured on the handle rivets 5 or any other desired type of fastening means.
A saw bolt 6 is adapted to be positioned through the slot in the handle, and this bolt is provided with a substantially rectangularshaped portion 7 which is adapted to have two of its opposite sides engage the slot in the handle, and the end of this portion 7 that projects from the handle is provided with an enlarged head portion 8. This portion 7 of the bolt 6 has a longitudinally extending slot 9 therein extending from one end, and the slotted portion of the head 8 is. adapted to receive one end of a cross out saw 10 therein. The head 8 is provided vith alining openings ll. therothrough. and these openings are adapted to aline with an opening in the end of the saw, and a fastening pin 12 is positioned through the same to securely hold the end of the saw in engagement with the head. The remaining portion of the bolt 6 is externally threaded as shown at 18, and is adapted to project from the opposite side of the slot in the handle from which the rectangular-shaped portion extends.
The bolt 6 is provided with a pair of curved washers 14 and 15, the washer 14: being positioned on the side of the handle adjacent the end of the saw. and being called the front washer, while the wasl err 15 engages the rear side of the handl These washers 1d. and are privided with laterally projecting bosses 16 that have alining openings therein, the opening in the washer ll being substantially rectangular-shaped to receive the correspondinglv shaped portion of the bolt, while the opening in the washer 15 is correspondingly shaped to the portion 13 of the bolt 6 to receive the same. The head 8 as illustrated in Fig. 3 is adapted to engage the base of the adjacent washer 14 and the various parts are clamped in locked relation with each other by means of a clamping wing nut 17 that operatively engages the threaded portion 13 of the saw bolt.
The front washer 14 is provided in its outer surface with a longitudinally extendin vertical slot 18 which intersects the centrally disposed opening therethrough, and which is adapted to receive the rear edge of the saw 10, when said saw is locked in the head of the bolt. This washer also is provided with an integral laterally projecting trough shaped guard 19 that extends at an angle from the adjacent lower end of the Washer straddlingthe lower end ofthe slot 18' and which is adapted to receive the teeth of the saw therein that are adjacent the connected end. This guard Will form a covering for the teeth and prevent theoperator 7 from being accidentally injured, the same. Inoperation, when itcis desired to place the handle in position on the saw, the front washer His placed over the slot, and the bolt then positioned through the opening in the Washer and the slot. The rear washer isthen placed on the-bolt, andthe ingnut is tightened up'to clamp the parts in posi tion. it will be understood that when, the bolt is, first placed, in position, the sameis brought into engagement with the. end o f'the crossisaw, and locked thereto by nieans or the locking pill 12 extendlng through the headed portion that engagesthesaw.
Upon loosening the nut 17 from engagebolt will be prevented from turning onthe handle and Working loose.
If desired, the trough-shaped guardon the front washer may be eliminated, but it is preferably made an integral partof, th
: same, as it afi'ords ample protection? for the saw teeth. that are. disposed directly adjacent the handle, and prevents the operator Copies of. this patent may be; obtained for from accidentally engaging these teeth and 7 any injury suffered therefrom. This guard also will protect the. teeth it covers While serving to guide the end of the saw into the sir-ch18.
From the foregoing description of the construction and operation'of my new and improveds'a v handle,the manner of applyin the saineto use and the operation thereof Will be readily understood, and it will be seen, that I have provided a Simple andv efficient means for carrying out. the OblQQQS of the. inve ti I claiinz,
The'cofmbination. with a saw handle hayiug therein a longitudinal rectangular slot,
a rectangular bolt slidable longitudinally and laterally in the slot and projecting from both sides. of the handle, said" bolt being split longitudinally from one end to receive a saw blade and enlarged clampingheads on, the ends. of said, split portions,fa curved washer having a slot to receive the split portions. and a boss to engage the enlarged headsdisposed between the handle and said enlarged portions of. the bolt, said asher having, a troughed integral guard; extending laterally from its lower end. to receive and guide a saw blade, the other end, of, said bolt being threaded, a curved Washer disposed on said bolt having. a slot therein, to receive the bolt, and a nut onlsaid bolttolock said blade to thehandle.
