E. C. ATKINS. CROSSC'UT-SAW' HANDLE.

NIFETERS, FHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON D blade.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIAS O. ATKINS, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CROSSCUT-SAW HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,740, dated October 2, 1877; application filed February 26, 1877.
of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification. My invention relates to saws; and it consists in the devices for fastening the saw-blade in the handle, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a section of the handle, showing the blade fastened therein. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
A represents the saw-handle, and B the saw- In the handle A is made a slot, a, extending from the end thereof inward for a suitable distance, and at the inner end of this slot a pin, d, is passed through the handle, at right angles with the slot, and in the center thereof, as shown in Fig. 1. Immediately above this pin d another pin, 6, is passed through the handle in the same direction as the slot to prevent the handle from splitting.
In the upper and lower edges of the saw-blade B, near the inner end, are made notches b b, of suitable size. The blade B is inserted in the slot at of the handle and forced upward in the same until the upper notch b is caught upon the pin d. A bolt, 0, is then passed through an elongated bolt-hole, i, in the lower end of the handle, and moved upward until it enters the notch b in the lower edge of the saw-blade, when a thumb-nut, D, is screwed up tightly on the end of the bolt, whereby the saw-blade is held firmly and securely in the handle, while at the same time it can be easily and quickly removed therefrom for sharpening or other purposes.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the split or slotted handle A, provided with the pin d and elongated bolt-hole i, the saw-blade B, provided with the notches b b, the bolt O, and thumb-nut D, sub stantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELIAS C. ATKINS.
