(No Model.) I'
` J. J. KEYES.
BASKET.
No. 543,023. Patented July 23, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE.
JAMES J. KEYES, OF PERU, INDIANA.
BASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 543,023, dated July 23, 1895.
Application tiled November 19, 1894. Serial No. 529,299. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES J. KEYES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peru, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baskets; and I do hereby de- Clare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part ot' this specification, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a basket that will possess durability and strength particularly at the corners thereof and will be materially improved in its general construction and its value enhanced.
rlhe invention consists in a basket constructed substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l of the drawings represents a perspective view of a basket constructed in accordance with my invention, the basket being shown as lyingupon its side and looking toward the bottom thereof. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the guards on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3, a similar view of the frame of the basket previous to the splints being woven thereon.
ln the accompanying drawings, A represents the bottom of the basket which is formed in two sections and held together by the longitudinal central support B. These sections, which are represented at a h, do not come together at their inner ends, but a sufficient space is left to receive the bottom c of the side bracesC, which extend above and transversely with the longitudinal support B.
The corner guards or protectors D E have their horizontal portions F extending under the bottomAof the basket and longitudinally therewith and at their juncture with the guards have shoulders d. In preparing these guards or protectors a piece of lumber is taken of the required width, thickness, and length to pass under the basket and extend upward at each end to the height thereof, and the ends of the strip of lumber are divided or sawed into three parts, and the onelof the parts cut oft to leave the shoulder d, aspshown more clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The bottom portion of the strip of lumber is left solid, so as to form a substantial support F for the bottom of the basket and the guards 0r protectors D E, or that portion of the strip which is to form the same, is steamed and bent into shape over a suitable former in the usual manner.
The side braces C extend up to the top of the basket and serve to give additional strength to the sides thereof.
The splints G H are woven together in the usual manner to form the interior bottom of the basket, the splints H being thinner and narrowerthan the splints G and extend up only a certain distance to form a portion of the sides of the basket, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings. The splints G extend up to the top of the basket and splints I are woven thereon, which are substantially of the same width as the splints G.
The above manner of weaving the splints, so as to carry the filling-splints II, inside the guards or protectors D E, a certain distance up the sides of the basket, adds materially to the strength and durability and especially at the corners of the basket, as it leaves exposed the guards or protectors to better serve their purpose.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a basket, the bottom formed of two sections separated at their inner ends by the cross brace, combined with the central support, the cross brace, and the corner guards or protectors which have their central portions to extend along opposite edges of the bottom sections, substantially as shown.
2. In a basket, the corner guards or protectors, having their ends split and'reduced in thickness by cutting away one of the split portions; the central portions being made to '-extend under the bottom of the basket, while Ytheir ends are ben-t so as to extend upwardly and have the splints woven around them, substantially as described. A
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES J. KEYES.
Witnesses:
