INVENTOR WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM T. LANE, OF PORT CHESTER, NEW YORK.
BASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,721, dated December 13, 1898. Application filed April 16, 1898. Serial No. 677,802. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. LANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Chester, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Baskets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to baskets of the type consisting of a frame over which is applied a flexible covering of canvas or other suitable material. Baskets of this type have usually been made by wholly inclosing the frame by the canvas or other covering used. Where such baskets are used in mills,th ey are dragged along the floor and are brought in contact with machinery, with the result of rapidly wearing out the covering where it comes in contact with such floor or machinery.
My invention consists in providing such a basket with a frame which is exposed along the bottom of the basket and, further, in covering the exposed frame or the upper edge of the basket with wood or other suitable material, the object of my invention being, first, to provide for the wear on the bottom or exposed portion of the basket, and, further, where wood is used to provide a wearing material which will not when brought in contact with metal give rise to a spark.
The accompanying drawings will serve to illustrate my invention;
Figure 1 is a view in perspective. Fig. 2 is a bottom view showing the frame exposed along the bottom. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the upper rim provided with a wooden protecting edge. Fig. 4 is a section of the frame at the bottom when provided with a protecting-covering. Fig. 5 is a section of the rim at the top provided with a protecting-covering.
In the drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
In the drawings, A represents the frame, which in the present case consists of the rectangular portions A and a circular top por-- tion A 13 is the covering, which may be of canvas or other suitable material. The portion of the frame A which passes over the bottom of the basket is exposed, as shown in Fig. 2. The parts A and A are preferably inclosed in the covering material 13.
0 represents portions of bent wood, indurated fiber, or other material concaved, as at D, to inclose the portions of the frame A and secured by means of clamps E, Fig. 1, or in any other suitable way. A similar protect ing-strip is shown in Figs. 3 and 5 as cover ing the outer edge of the portions A of the frame.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- 1. In a basket, the combination of a frame 1 exposed along the bottom, a covering which includes all portions of said frame except the bottom, and strips of resisting material covering said exposed portion of said frame.
2. In abasket, the combination of the frame exposed along the bottom, a flexible covering, and strips of resisting material covering the exposed bottom portion of said frame and the outer and upper rim. of said frame.
3. In a basket, the combination of the frame A, having the exposed portions A covering B and strips of resisting material C, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
YVILLIAM T. LANE.
