Be it known that I, CHARLES H. SoHo'rTA, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Baltimore county, Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Overshoes for Horses, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention to prevent the slipping of horses upon ice; and it consists in an improved supplemental or overshoe adapted to be secured over the horseshoe proper, havino suitable removable calks, as will hereinafter fully appear.

In the further description of the said invention which follows, reference is made to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a horses hoof together with an ordinary horseshoe, and the improved overshoe which is applied to the shoe; and Fig, 2 a perspective view of the overshoe alone, as seen from the side which comes in contact with the horseshoe. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a part of the overshoe illustrating a peculiar construction of the same whereby a safety heel clip can be applied thereto. Fig. 4C is a perspective view of the safety heel clip.

Referring now to the drawing, L is a horses hoof, and Zi an ordinary shoe which is secured to the hoof in the usual manner.

The improved overshoe consists of two separable curved plates c which rest upon the shoe Z), and are provided with the curved clamping straps e which are bent so as to be at a right angle with the plates c and adapted to fit closely against the edge of the shoe. The outer ends of the straps e stand apart and can be drawn toward each other by means of the bolt f and the nut g.

CZ, CZ are the toe clips which pass between the shoe I) and the hoof a.; and the inner edges of the plates o near the heel of the overshoe, have the turnedeupflanges 72. which bear against the inner edge of the shoe Z). The said flanges h. are provided with the angular heel clips designated by 'vl and y', the former passing under the shoe b, and the latter practically covering the heel ends of the same and are drawn tightly in contact with the shoe when the bolt f is set up by means of the nut g, as will appear by reference to Fig. 1 of the drawing.

As the clips Z extend inward beyond the outer edge of the shoe b and pass between the shoe and the hoof a, it maybe necessary tocut away a small portion of the hoof for their reception.

To prevent inward deflection of the heel portions ofthe plates c of the overshoe independently of the shoe b, I form inthe under surface of the overshoe, the grooves 7c having corrugated bottoms as shown particularly in Fig. 3, and vplace in the said grooves the corrugated safety clips Z having flanges which overlap the outer edge of the shoe as shown in Fig. 1.

It will be understood that by tightening the bolt j', the plates c at points adjacent to the clips Z will be drawn inward, while the flanges Zz will be forced outward, and in consequence the said plates are practically levers, with their fulcra at d; and the shoe b will therefore be tightly clamped, a result which as far as I am informed and believe has not before been attained,

m, m are ordinary calks which are screwed into the plates 0 of the overshoe; and those at the heel end of the device, in addition to their main function, serve to hold the safety clips Z in place.

I claim as my invention 1. In combination with a horseshoe, an overshoe embracing a pair of separate plates with calks thereon, and having heel-engaging clips, which plates at their outer edges and near to the toe ends, are bent at a right angle and thereby adapted to bear against the outer edge of the horseshoe, and at their inner edges, near to the heel ends which are unconnected, provided with flanges which bearagainst the inner edge of the horseshoe, and means whereby the toe ends of the plates are drawn toward each other and the heel ends forced outward, thereby clamping the horseshoe in a manner substantially as specified.

2. In combination with a horseshoe, an overshoe embracing a pair of separate plates with calks thereon, and having heel-engaging clips, which plates at their outer edges near to the toe ends, are bent at a right angle and thereby adapted to bear against the outer edge of the horseshoe and are provided with inwardly extending clips, and at their inner edges near to the heel ends which are unconnected, provided with flanges which bear against the inner edge of the horseshoe, and means whereby the toe ends of the plates are drawn toward each other and the ysafety clips which heel ends forced outward, thereby clamping the horseshoe in a manner substantially as specified.

In combination with overshoe embracing a pair of separate plates with calls thereon, which plates at their outer edges and near to the toe ends have clips and are bent at a right angle so as to bear against the edge of the horseshoe and at their inner edges near the heel ends, provided with fianges carrying heel clips, means whereby the toe ends of the plates are drawn toward each other, and their heel ends forced outward, thereby clamping each of the plates to the horseshoe, and removable are secured to the plates immediately in front of the heel clips, substantially as described.

In combination with a horseshoe, an overshoe embracing a pair of separate plates with calks thereon, and having grooves therein, which at their outer edges and near to the toe ends are bent at a right angle and adapted to bear against the edge of the horseshoe and are fitted with clips, and at their inner edges near the heel ends provided with flanges carrying clips, a bolt and nut whereby the toe ends of the plates are drawn toward each other, and the heel ends forced outward, thereby clamping each of the plates to the horseshoe, and safety flanged clips which are held in the grooves in the plates, substantially as specified.

5. in combination with a horseshoe, an overshoe embracing a pair of separate plates with calks thereon, and having grooves with corrugated bottoms which at their outer edges near to the toe ends, are bent at a right angle, and thereby adapted to bear against the edge of the horseshoe and are fitted with clips, and at their inner edges near the heel are provided with flanges carrying clips, a bolt and nut whereby the toe ends of the plates are drawn toward each other and the a horseshoe, an

heel ends forced outward, thereby clamping each of the plates to the horseshoe, and safety flanged clips which are held in the grooves in the plates, substantially as specified.

6. In combination with a horseshoe, an overshoe embracing a pair of separate plates with calks thereon, and having grooves therein with corrugated bottoms, which at their outer edges and near to the toe ends, are bent at a right angle and adapted to bear against the edge of the horseshoe and are fitted with clips, and at their inner edges near the heel are provided with flanges earrying clips, a bolt and nut whereby the toe end of the plates are drawn toward each other and the heel ends forced outward, thereby clamping each of the plates to the horseshoe, and safety lianged clips with corrugated under surfaces which are held in the said grooves, substantially as specified.

In combination with a horseshoe, an overshoe embracing a pair of separate plates with calks thereon, and having grooves therein with corrugated bottoms, which at their outer edges and near to the toe ends, are bent at a right angle and adapted to bear against the edge of the horseshoe and are fitted with clips, and at their inner edges near the heel are provided with flanges earrying clips, a bolt and nut whereby the toe ends of the plates are drawn toward each other and the heel ends forced outward, thereby clamping each of the plates to the horseshoe, and safety flanged clips with eorrugated under surfaces which are held in the said grooves, the said safety clips being held in place by calks which pass through them and are screwed into the said plates, substantially as specified.
