Description

(No Model.)
O. P. MASON. FENDER FOR FIREPLAGES.
No. 542,062. Patented July 2, 1895.
. Bellaire, in the county of Belmont and State UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORLANDO P. MASON, OF BELLAIRE, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES F. DU BOIS AND CHARLES W. DICKENS, OF SAME PLACE.
FENDER F OR FIREPLACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,062, dated July 2, 1895.
Application filed February 25,1895. Serial No. 539,617. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORLANDO P. MASON, of
of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fenders for Fireplaces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use same.
My invention relates to improvements in fenders for fireplaces, the object being to make a cheap, strong, and durable fender, whose body portion consists of a single piece of sheet metal.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of a sheet metallic blank of the shape required to form two fenders. Fig. 2 is a top plan of the product obtained by stamping the blank shown in Fig. 1 into the shape required to form two fenders. Fig. 3 is a top plan of one of the fenders; and Fig. 4 is a transverse section upon any line 4. 4, Figs. 2 and 3.
Referring to the drawings,A designates the sheet metallic blank from which two fenders are constructed. This blank is oblong in shape, as shown in Fig.1,with the ends thereof circular or curved, as shown. The blank is slotted centrally and longitudinally, as at a. Said slot is so arranged that the longitudinal walls 0, thereof are exactly parallel with the longitudinal external edges A of the blank, and each end wall 0, of said slot is preferably concentric with the outer edge of the adjacent end of the blank. A blank such as has just been described, and which is exhibited in Fig. 1, having been formed, the
same is operated upon by suitable co-operating dies and bent or stamped into the shape shown in Figs. 2 and 4, so thata section taken transversely through either side or end of the 0 struck-up blank shall be as shown in Fig. 4 that is, either side or end of the struck-up blank, in cross-section, is arch-shaped, or approximately so, with both longitudinal edges A of the struck-up blank (see Fig. 4) arranged 5 in the same, or approximately the same, horizontal plane. Simultaneously with the stamping operation, or after, as desired, the blank is cut centrally, vertically, and longitudinally in any approved manner, as indicated by the 'dotted line B in Fig. 2, thereby forming two pieces, each whereof constitutes a fender that is arch-shaped in cross-section, with both longitudinal edges of the fender arranged in the same, or approximately the same, horizontal plane, and with the ends of the fender curving inwardly, as at 0, Fig. 3.
I would here remarkthat the fender, if desired, may be reinforced by braces or crosspieces. (Not shown.)
What I claim is- A fender out from substantially anellipsoidal sheet metal blank having an opening at its center corresponding to the shape of the blank and stamped so as to have an archshape between the edge of the hole and. its own edge, the line of incision being substantially coincident with the major axis of the blank.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification, in the presence of two witnesses, this 21st day of December, 1894. I
ORLANDO P. MASON.
Witnesses:
