MUSEUM JAR AND COVER THEREFOR.

WlTNE'SSES: INVENTOR ATTORNEYAZ.
U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH AMIA, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO WHITALL, TATUM 8o 00., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MUSEUM-JAR AND COVER THEREFOR.
SIEOIFICATION'forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,890, dated June 11, 1895. 7 Application filed March 16, 1895. Serial No. 541,970. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH AMIA, a resident of Boston, Suffolk county, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Museum-Jars and Covers Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to museum jars and covers therefor, and has for its object to produce a structure in which swinging or rotations of the specimens will be avoided, and to this end my invention consists in the arrangement of parts in a museum jar as ishereinafter described and claimed.
My invention will be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which' Figure 1 represents a museum-jar and cover constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the cover, and Fig.3 is a section of the cover on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Heretofore when'suspending specimens in jars for museum purposes it has been customary to hang the specimens from the cover of the jar by a single thread. This species of hanging, however, was unsatisfactory, in that the specimens would swing or turn and would thus present the wrong side thereof to view, it being well understood that most specimens require to be hung in such a manner as to present always a certain particular favorable side. Now by myinvention this swinging or twisting which is primarily due to twisting of the suspension string, is avoided.
I attain the object of my invention by suspending the specimen by two strings, beingwhat is known asbi-filar suspension.
In the drawings, A is a museum jar of suitable form, shown in the present instance as cylindrical, and B is tht cover thereof. The cover B is provided with a flange b for entering the jar and forming a tight joint. The cover B is also provided with two lugs or projections b which may be formed integral therewith and which being perforated as at c constitute suspending means or suspenders for the specimen. The specimen 0 may be suspended from these two suspenders in any suitable manner, such for instance, as by pass ing a thread a through the perforations in the lugs or suspenders and attaching the ends of this thread to the specimen (J at two points.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a museum jar, a cover 55 therefor, said cover having a flange b and two lugs or projections formed integral therewith and extending from the under face of the cover, said lugs having apertures therein which form a means for attaching a specimen, substantially as and for the purposes specified. 1
JOSEPH AMIA.
