SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,578, dated June 4, 1895.

The object of this invention is to provide a means by which chains such as neck chains or lorgnette chains, may be worn and adjusted upon the clothing of the wearer, as may be desired, and to provide a convenient means of fastening such chains to the clothes of the wearer.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents my improved chain provided with my improved chain-fastener. Fig. 2 represents the improved fastener, showing two sections of the chain. Figs. 3 and 4 show modifications of the improvement herein described.

A represents a chain made up of sections A, B, O, B and C. These sections have at their ends, cups E and F, into'which cups the ends of these sections are fastened. These two cups E and F are united at H, at which point H, the hook I and the arm K of the ornament D are alsov fastened, so that the two cups E and F, hook I and ornament D are united, and form one piece; the said ornament and cups being so arranged that the ornament D will be in the front of the chain, and visible on the clothes of the wearer, while the hook I should be set at such an angle as to be easily hooked on to the clothes of the wearer. The neck piece A goes around the neck of the wearer. One end of said neck piece A is fastened into the cup E (Fig. 1), and the other end of the said neck piece A is fastened into another cup F. The pieces B and O, B and 0' make up the rest of the chain; the ends of the said pieces B and 0 being alternately fastened into the cups E and F.

B and C will be terminal pieces of the chain, and have one end fastened in cups E and F, shown in Fig. 1, and meet in the hook J, so that the chain will be composed of sections, the ends-of which are fastened in cups E and F, united at H, at which point are also joinedthe hook I and ornament D.

,Heretofore when these chains have been worn, the wearer has had difficulty in maintaining the chains in graceful or proper position. By means of this invention, the chain can be fastened by the wearer with the hooks I and kept in position, and the appearance of the chain improved by the ornament covering the hook I.

In Fig. 3 is shown a modification of this invention, in which, instead of separate cupsE and F being used, one cup E (Fig. 3) is employed, and the ends of B and Oof the chain meet in said cup E'gand the ornament D is fastened by means of the arm K at H, directly opposite the point H, at which the hook I is fastened. A further modification is shown in Fig. V4, in which is shown a continuous chain, and the ornament D and hook I are fastened to the chain A at H.

Of course I do not limit myself to the precise methods herein shown, but I desire to cover by my invention, the mechanical equivalents of any of the parts or methods, herein described.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A chain comprising a number of sections and cups, for securing the ends of said sec tions together at their points of contact, having ornaments and hooks at such points of contact, substantially as and for the purposes herein described.

, 2. A chain composed of the part A, sections Band 0 and B and O, and the ends of which said part A and sections B and O and B and C are each joined. in cups E and F, said cups E and F being united at a point H, in conjunction with a hook I and ornament D, fastened to said cups E and F at H; the whole forming one chain, substantially as and for the purposes herein described.
