UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSIAH C. MIFFLIN, OF DUQU OIN, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED STEP-LADDER, CLOT HES-RACK, AND IRONING-BOARD.
- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,179, dated May 28, 1895.
Application filed February 2, 1895- Serial No. 537,087. (No model.)
To whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSIAH O. MIFFLIN, a citizen of the .United States of America, residing at Duquoin, in the county of Perry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Step; Ladder, Clothes-Rack, and Ironing- Board; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a combined step-ladder, clothes-rack and ironing-board, and it consists in the construction 7 and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l isa perspective view showing the device arranged for use as an ironing -board support and clothes-rack. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the arrangement of the parts as a stepladder; and Fig. 3 is a side View, partly in section, showing the parts folded upon each other for storage. I
In practice I provide two frames which are suitably connected to each other to form a ladder, and a third frame to provide an addition to the clothes-rack.
A designates the ladder frame which is made up of side pieces a ato which are rigidly secured flat steps a. One of the steps is provided on its upper surface with a recess or notch a and I provide the lower edges of the upper ends of the side pieces a a with notches a for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
B designates a frame consisting of side pieces I) b between which are rigidly secured rounds b and boards 6 The side pieces of this frame are of a slightly greater distance apart than the side pieces of the frame A, and the frames A and B are connected to each other by bars 0 which are pivotally attached I to the frame B near its lower end and to the intermediate portion of the frame A. The connecting-bars c are provided with extensions on opposite sides as shown, and through these extensions the connecting-bolts pass. It will also be noted that the upper and lower ends of the side pieces of the frame B are provided with enlargements on one edge, the enlargements at the lower end forming a larger base while those at the upper end of'the frame serve as a support forthe transverse board b These enlargements also serve to hold the ladder and frame against lateral displacement when folded one upon the other as hereinafter described.
D designates the ironing-board which is provided with a hook d and carries or has hinged thereto an arm (1 which is adapted to engage the recess a in one of the steps of the ladder when the ironing-board is placed in position so as to rest upon the step of the ladder im mediately above the one having the recess 0?, the hook d at the large end of the ironingboard engaging with one of the rounds of the frame B, thus supporting the ironing-board in proper position for use.
The ironing-board is provided with a transverse batten cl which not only serves to strengthen the same but also lies over one of the rounds of the frame B to support the board when it is placed between the frame and ladder for storage purposes.
E designates a frame consisting of side pieces e 6 between which are secured rounds or bars e, and this frame is provided with arms e which are pivoted on the transverse bars 6' and have notches in theirlower edges which are adapted to engage the rounds of the frame B when the frame E is in use as a clothes-rack, the intermediate notches permitting the arms to be swung to lie parallel with the side pieces of the frame to which they are connected.
The supplemental rack E may not only be used as a clothes-rack, but across the upper arms of the same a board may be placed to support a pail or bucket in using the stepladder, and the device may be used eifectively for other than domestic purposes, as, for instance, supporting boards in making scaffoldings especially for paper hangers use.
It will be noted that the frames A and B when folded together are adapted to contain the ironing-board between them, the parts being held together by the ordinary hook and eye as shown, and that the frame E when the- ICO A and B, the arms having extensions on opposite sides through which the connecting bolts pass, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the frame A consisting of side pieces cross-bars or steps, the side pieces having notches near their upper ends and one of the cross-bars or steps havinga notch in Its upper side, of a frame B connected to the frame A by arms 0 0, together with an ironingrboardor table D having a hook d at one end for engagement with a round of the frame B and a hinged arm d which engages with the notch in one of the steps of the frame A, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
3. In combination with the frames A and B connected to each other by bars 0 c, of an ironing-board which is supported thereby, of a supplemental frameE having rounds and pivoted arms. 6 the arms having end and intermediate notches, for engagement with the rounds of the frame B, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSIAH O. MIFFLIN.
