Application filed December 27, 1912.
1/ b all whom it may concern Be it known that we, An'rirun J. Dnwnr and ALFRED J. CONKEY, citizens of the United States, residing at New London in the county of Henry and State of l ow a, have invented certain new and useful. improvements in Combination Step-Ladders and Ironing-Tables; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact dcscription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in combined step ladders and ironing tables.
()ne object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily converted from a step ladder into an ironing table or from an ironing table into a step ladder and which when not in use as either an ironing table or step ladder may be folded up in close compact form.
Another object is to provide a combined step ladder and ironing table which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction etiicient and reliable in operation and well adapted to the purposes for which it is designed.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of our improved combination step ladder and ironing table showing the parts arranged to form the latter; 2 a similar view showing the parts arranged to form a step ladder; Fig. 3 is a front view of the device with the parts arranged as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings; Fig. t is a bottom plan View of one end of the ironing; board which forms the top of the table and the prop of the ladder; Fig, 5 is a detail horizontal section through the stop member of the device taken on the line of Fig. 3.
Our improved combination step ladder and ironing table comprises a ladder or step member 1 and an ironing board 2 which when the device is arranged as an ironing table forms the top of the latter as shown in Fig. 1, and when the device is arranged Specification of Letters latent.

as a step ladder forms the prop thereof as shown in Fig. 2 ot' the drawing. The ladder or stop member of the device is formed in main outer and supplemental inner sections 3 and 4t which are pivotally connected and are adapted to be folded together as clearly shown in Figs. and 3 of the drawings to term the ladder or stop member of thc device. The outer section 2-3 of the ladder member 1 comprises side bars 5 the ends of which are oil's-ct at points near the centers thereof. said ends being otlset to a distance corrcs iionding with the width thereof as shown. The side bars 3 converge from their lower toward their upper cudsand are connected by a series of cross pieces 6 which form one-half of the steps of the ladder. The cross pieces 6 of the upper portion of the section 3 form the outer portions of the upper steps of the ladder while the cross pieces in the lower portion of the section Form the rear sides of the lower steps of the ladder as is clearly indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings and in full lines in .i ig. 3 oi the drawings.
The inner section l of the ladder incinbcr also comprises side bars 7 which, like the side bars 5 oil. the section 3 are also offsetat points nca r their center or near the pivotal conucctiou thereof with the side bars ot the main section 3, said side bars 7, however, bring otl'sct in opposite directions from the side bars so that when the sections 3 and l are tolded together to form the ladder the ends of the side bars of one of the sections t'orm contiuluitious oi or extend in line with the opposite ends of the side bars oi. the other section as is clearly indicated in Fla. 2 of the drawings. The side k ars 7 are connected by a series of cross bars 8 which when the sections of the ladder member are brought into engagement, co-act with the cross bars (S of the other ladder section and form with said bars 6 the treads or steps of the ladder.
The side bars 5 and 7 ot' the ladder sections 3 and t are pivot-ally connected by a pivot rod 9 which extends through said side bars in the center of the widest portions thereof and arranged through said wide portions of the sidebars of each side of' the pivot rod 9 are tie bolts or rivets 10 which are provided to prevent the side bars from splitting at this point. Below each of the cross bars 6 and 8 of the ladder sections is arranged a tie rod 11 said rod serving to brace and strengthen the cross bars or steps of the ladder.
The upper ends of the side bars 5 of the main ladder section 3 are pivotally en-' gaged with the ends of a cross bar or ring 12 which is secured to a block 13 to the opposite edge of which is secured the wider end of the ironing board 2 which forms the prop ot' the ladder and the top of the table. When the device is arranged as a ladder the block 18 forms the upper step or top of the ladder and is of sufficient width for supporting a bucket or other receptacle. Vhen the device is arranged as an ironing table the block 13 forms a spacing member the inner side of the ironing board and prop member 2 of the device are combined rack bars and. ladder supporting legs 15 which when the device is arranged as a step ladder are adapted to be spread apart at their lower ends and to engage the floor and form supporting legs for the prop member 2 of the ladder. The outer ends of the arms 15 are preferably shaped to fit flat against the floor when arranged as supporting legs and the outward movement of the said arms when thus arranged is limited by a chain or flexible connection 16 secured at its ends to the bars and midway between its ends to the inner side of the board 2. The bars are further held in position to form supporting legs by a hook 17 which is pivotally connected at one end to the upper end of one of the bars and is adapted to be engaged with an eye 18 in the other bar as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing. The step and prop members 1 and 2 of the device when arranged to form a step ladder are limited in their outward movement or prevented from being spread too far by chains or flexible connections 19 the ends of which are connected to the inner edges of the upper portion of the side bars 5 of the ladder section 3 while the other ends thereof are connected to the inner side of the board or prop member 2 as shown.
. When the device is arranged as an ironing table the sections 3 and 4 of the ladder or step member of the device are swung open or to the positions shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings and thereby form supporting legs for the ironing table, the top of which is formed by the board 2 as. shown.
When the parts are thus arranged the rung 14 in. the upper end of the section 4 is engaged with notches 20 a series of which are formed in each of the bars 15, said notched bars thus forming an adjustable connection for the upper end of the section 1 whereby the sections 8 and a may be held in position to support the board or top of the table at different elevations and permitting the formation of a high or low table. the bars 15 are employed as a connection for the upper end of the table supporting section 4- the hook 17 at the inner end of the bars is disengaged from its eye, thereby permitting the inner ends of the bars to be swung together or to position wherein the rung 1 1 and upper ends of the side bars 7 ot the section 4.-
therewith.
